Hi,
I am 35 and opted to get a sonogram/mammogram baseline this year instead of wait until 40. I do have semi cystic breasts too so I do not like feeling that a self exam is not easy to do. They did not see anything on the mammo, yet said I had a 4mm cyst on the sono. The cyst was not a simple one as they said it had some "gunk" in it and therefore would follow it every six months for two years w a sonogram. The radiologist said he felt it would probably be gone by the next check. Mmmmm....I am just feeling unsettled about this. I am not sure if I should wait or ask for a biopsy. My only concern is that a biopsy also poses issues...for example, the scar that they then will always read on the future scans and so on.
Has anyone had this issue?

Thanks so much!

What can I do next?

wait it out the first 6 months, & see if there's any changes.

My Mom did this & then requested a biopsy on the next go-round. Biopsy was negative.

& yes, the scar tissue can be a concern. Make sure the procedure is fully-documented & you have easily-accessible copies.

Can they do a core needle biopsy on it? This involves just removing some tissue from the cyst itself, not taking the whole thing out.

I had quite a few of those done in the past. I used to joke with my dr that he should open a drive through for core needle biopsies and I'd be his best customer. Sorry--not making light of your worry, because I know it's scary. It's probably nothing, but if you don't want to watch and wait, then don't. Or get a second opinion. You are your own best advocate : )

Let us know how it's going, ok?

If they can do a guided needle biopsy, rather than a lumpectomy to biopsy, would go in that direction. I too, had my baseline at 35 rather than 40, because I still planned to have and bf another baby. I had a galactocele that I knew about, and had it removed. When they did the routine pathology on the cyst and surrounding tissue, the surrounding tissue showed ... breast cancer. Not trying to scare you, but I can't imagine what my outcome would have been if I didn't have that cyst out and the routine pathology done. Good luck

I would get it checked out for sure. I really would not worry about a scar.
For future mamograms, just mention the spot and it will be marked.

I had a similar situation, though I'm a bit older, and I asked why not do the needle biopsy right away? The doctor said there was no reason to unless the nodule (which is what I had, not a cyst) changed or grew. That seemed reasonable. Six months later it had grown, they did a needle biopsy, and the results were benign. Given that you have semi cystic breasts, the course your doctor is recommending seems reasonable. If what they saw on the sono was very concerning, they would probably want to do the biopsy right away.

It's hard to put it out of your head, but that's what I tried to do for the six months. I also monitored my breasts for changes (discharge, etc.) during those six months, knowing I could always go back if I saw a change.

Good luck,
A.
