Hello Mamasource ladies:

I am a homeschool mom about to purchase the Sonlight curriculum. I am thinking of getting the newcommers. I am looking for a curriculum that is strong in the language arts area for my second grader. I need him to read and write better and it needs to challenge him. Is this a good curriculum? Does it have enough language arts? Please give me your advice or let me know of a strong Language Arts curriculum. I want an all enclusive curriculum (math, science, language arts, writing, reading program and read alounds, bible and history)and I do want it to be Bible based. I have emailed my homeschool group as well but would love to hear what you ladies have to say also.

Thank you all for taking the time to give me your input.

So What Happened?

Thank you each for taking out the time to give all this great info. I have used abeka in the past it is a great curriculum. Thanks for all the ideas and suggestions in other curriculums. If you know of someone that has used Sonlight and can give me some information on the Language Arts portion, I would love to hear more about it. If you read this a few months later please give me your input and share with me your experience/curriculum choices. Thanks again and happy homeschool to all!

I have not tried Sonlight, but have heard good things about it. I myself have my two children do A.C.E. (Accelerated Christian Education). This curriculum is strong in reading comprehension, almost as strong as how tied it is in God's word. My kids like it because it is little booklets and they feel as though they are accomplishing something a little more. The subjects it covers is Math, English, Word Building (spelling), Science, Social Studies, Literature and Creative writing. There are also more to choose from. I personally do math with Saxon, but it is my daughter's preference (she learned math in school with Chicago Math). I hope this helps. If you have any more questions, please feel free to e-mail me.

I am not that familiar with Sonlight but I would suggest Abeka. Abeka has a very thorough Language Arts program. You can also buy an entire grade package that has every subject or you can buy individual subjects. They are Bible based as well. You can go on their website and check to see if there will be a display in your area. They travel around and you can go and look through all the books and speak to a sales rep. It's always nice to actually see the books first.

We use Tapestry of Grace and although it doesn't have Math or science...my daughter and i love it! It has a good mix of reading with related project ideas to bring the material to life! It is also a curriculum that you buy one time...there are four years of materials and once you have each of the years...you have the materials you need to teach every child that you homeschool! All the books are easily reserved at the local libraries. The curriculum does include English, Language Arts, History, Bible, Geography, Literature and Arts and Crafts. There is a great website that is constantly updated with great idea's to go along with the material. I know others whom use the sonlight materials and although they like it...their one complaint is that there is almost too much reading (unless you are good at picking and choosing from a list the material doesn't lead you to what is mandatory vs. supplemental or optional so, if you are anal like me...you might get the idea that you need to read every book that is listed! Those that I know that use this material successfully, pick and choose. They also state that they wish there were more activity idea's in addition to the reading as their younger ones need the activities to make the material come alive.) Tapestry is a good mix of both activity and literature. Check out their website: www.tapestryofgrace.com Good luck and let me know if you have any questions about the curriculum.

Hi Y., I use Alpha Omega's curriculum for my two boys. I've used their programs from Kinder to 3rd grade so far. They have all of the subject packs. I use Lifepac for their language arts and Horizons for math. This year we just started using the Switched on Schoolhouse computer program for history & science - my son loves it! Check out their site at www.aop.com & go to the homeschooling section. If you have any questions, just email me. Good luck & have fun!

I have looked into Sonlight for my 4 yr old and really like it have yet to buy it. I have been watching for good deals on eBay, craigslist and vegsource for used packages. I really like this style of learning and find it similar to Five In A Row which we use. Check out the forums on some homeschool sites or with your local groups (PPEA,FPEA, etc) and you will get tons of experienced opinions as well. Vegsource has a forum as well as several Yahoo egroups. Best wishes and way to go homeschooling :-)
