Songs from Mother to Daughter
I am putting together a slide show of pictures of my daughter's first year of life. I would like to add background music...something reflective of a mother's love for her daughter. Does anyone have any suggestions of appropriate songs? I can't seem to come up with the perfect song. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks Moms!

Having 3 daughters myself - I tend to like:
Martina McBride's In My Daughter's Eyes
or
Leeann Womack's I Hope You Dance
If you want a slow lullaby type, Bette Midler's song from Beaches, Baby Mine is a very good one that I used to sing to my girls.
Daughter's by John Mayer is good - but a little more from a male to a daughter.
Oh and the new one from Plumb - Safe In My Arms is really good too.
Hope that helps!

There is a beautiful song called "In My Daughters Eyes" by Martina McBride that will just bring tears to your eyes everytime. I love to hear it and someday plan to use it to do a slide show for my 10 year old. My husband heard it and he bought me the CD for Christmas, so that was a sweet thing. Enjoy the day!
I'm a f/t working mom of a 10 year old daughter and have been married to my awesome husband for 14 years.

Hi K.:
Go to Google and type in words to song - Turn Around -
the words are so true and very beautiful.
Another good song is Let the Sunshine in - I used to sing this to my babies as I rocked them. My oldest daughter asked me for the words when she had a grandbaby of her own. I had forgotten some of the words (30 years later) and I went into Google and found them for my daughter to sing to her G/baby.
You can listen to some of the songs and tape them to use in your video.
It's amazing just what our children learn and remember from us when they get older.
Sincerely
D. Y.

"I hope you dance" by Lee Ann Womack
Another GREAT one if you also wanted to include a song from her dad. The Mills Brothers sing "Daddy's Little Girl"...so sweet!
Marc Cohn also has a beautiful song called "The Things We've Handed Down". It's more for expecting parents, but if your daughter is young, it still asks questions about what she will grow up to be...beautifuly melody (lyrics below).
Good luck on the project. You and all who have responded have given me great ideas for a gift for my own mama!
THE THINGS WE'VE HANDED DOWN
The Things We`ve Handed DownDon`t know much about you
Don`t know who you are
We`ve been doing fine without you
But, we could only go so far
Don`t know why you chose us
Were you watching from above
Is there someone there that knows us
Said we`d give you all our love
Will you laugh just like your mother
Will you sigh like your old man
Will some things skip a generation
Like I`ve heard they often can
Are you a poet or a dancer
A devil or a clown
Or a strange new combination of
The things we`ve handed down
I wonder who you`ll look like
Will your hair fall down and curl
Will you be a mama`s boy
Or daddy`s little girl
Will you be a sad reminder
Of what`s been lost along the way
Maybe you can help me find her
In the things you do and say
And these things that we have given you
They are not so easily found
But you can thank us later
For the things we`ve handed down
You may not always be so grateful
For the way that you were made
Some feature of your father`s
That you`d gladly sell or trade
And one day you may look at us
And say that you were cursed
But over time that line has been
Extremely well rehearsed
By our fathers, and their fathers
In some old and distant town
From places no one here remembers
Come the things we`ve handed down

There is a song that my Church choir has sang several times on Mother's Day. It is called: A MOTHER'S LOVE. Words by: Brian Carr and Betty Fraser. Music by: Brian Carr and Ed Kee. Arranged by: Joseph Martin. A Christian music store should have it or maybe another music store. It is beautiful and some of us end up crying while singing it. Some of the words are: She often longs for sounds of little feet upon the floor, and hungers for the echo of a child's sweet laugh once more. Her gentle hands caress a quilt upon the tiny bed, where once a little child knelt down and bedtime prayers were said. ----------------------------------------- The end goes: Through all the years, the joys, the tears, and times when you're apart, nothing ever changes the love within her heart. It's always there to hold you. Forever to enfold you. This gift from GOD above. That's a MOTHER'S love. Hope this helps you.

Thats a great idea! That will be SO special!! I've made a journal for mine of the funny things they say and do, etc. My mom did that for my brothers and I and it is a treasure. As far as songs, of course Butterfly Kisses by Bob Carlise. I know that is a dad singing to his daughter but it definitely comes from a mother's heart too and the other one I didn't see mentioned was Let Them Be Little by Lonestar. It almost always makes me tear up. Good luck.

I see that my favorite, "In My Daughter's Eyes" (Martina McBride, saw her 3X in concert LOVE her!!!) has been mentioned, but...
10yrs ago while preg w/ first daughter, I declared this to be my song for my firstborn: "From This Moment" by Shania Twain. It's actually a love song, but the words to me are like that of a mother to her child.
"From this moment, life has begun/From this moment, you are the one..."
What a beautiful idea you have. That firstborn of mine now has 3y/o twin siblings, but I hope to do something precious like that for her someday, esp since her 10th bday's coming up :O

There is a wonderful musical ," My turn on Earth", available to download at ldsaudio.com. The song that I think would be a great one is called Angel Lullaby. It talks about how mother guides her child by day and angels guard her child by night. I sang it to my kids and they loved it. You might also check out the library for CDs of lullabies and kids' songs.

Lots of good responses. I liked singing "I Can't Give You Anything But Love" to my little girl and boy even when they were in the womb. I happen to like the Ella Fitzgerald version. A little more upbeat than sappy though.
An oldie but definitely a goodie.

I LOVE the song "In My Daughter's Eyes" by Martina McBride. I recently saw it used at a wedding for a slide show.
Here are the lyrics:
In my daughter's eyes I am a hero
I am strong and wise and I know no fear
But the truth is plain to see
She was sent to rescue me
I see who I wanna be
In my daughter's eyes
In my daughter's eyes everyone is equal
Darkness turns to light and the
world is at peace
This miracle God gave to me
gives me strength when I am weak
I find reason to believe
In my daughter's eyes
And when she wraps her hand
around my finger
Oh it puts a smile in my heart
Everything becomes a little clearer
I realize what life is all about
It's hangin' on when your heart
has had enough
It's giving more when you feel like giving up
I've seen the light
It's in my daughter's eyes
In my daughter's eyes I can see the future
A reflection of who I am and what will be
Though she'll grow and someday leave
Maybe raise a family
When I'm gone I hope you see how happy
she made me
For I'll be there
In my daughter's eyes
Hope that helps! Good luck with the slide show!

FOR YOU WILL (Monica)
When you're feeling lost in the night
When you feel your world just ain't right
Call on me, I will be waiting
Count on me, I will be there
Anytime the times get too tough
Anytime your best ain't enough
I'll be the one to make it better
I'll be there to protect you
See you through
I'll be there and there ain't nothing
I won't do
(Chorus:)
I will cross the ocean for you
I will go and bring you the moon
I will be your hero, your strength
Anything you need
I will be the sun in your sky
I will light your way for all time
I promise you
For you I will
I will shield your heart from the rain
I will let no harm come your way
Oh, these arms will be your shelter
No, these arms won't let you down
If there is a mountain to move
I will move that mountain for you
I'm here for you, I'm here forever
I will be your fortress
Tall and strong
I'll keep you safe, I'll stand beside you
Right or wrong
(Repeat chorus)
(Bridge:)
For you I will
Lay my life on the line
For you I will fight (oh, oh)
For you I will die
With ev'ry breath, with all my soul
I'll give my word, I'll give it all
Put your faith in me
(Put your faith in me)
And I'll do anything
(Repeat chorus)
I will, I will, I will
(Repeat chorus)
I promise you
For you I will (I will)
I promise you
For you I will

I Turn To You lyrics
When I'm lost in the rain,
In your eyes I know I'll find the light to light my way.
And when I'm scared and losing ground;
When my world is going crazy, you can turn it all around.
And when I'm down you're there; pushing me to the top.
You're always there; giving me all you've got.
For a shield from the storm;
For a friend; for a love
To keep me safe and warm,
I turn to you.
For the strength to be strong;
For the will to carry on;
For everything you do;
For everything that's true,
I turn to you.
When I lose my will to win,
I just reach for you and I can reach the sky again.
I can do anything,
'Cause your love is so amazing; 'cause your love inspires me.
And when I need a friend, you're always on my side;
Giving me faith that gets me through the night.
For a shield from the storm;
For a friend; for a love
To keep me safe and warm,
I turn to you.
For the strength to be strong;
For the will to carry on;
For everything you do;
For everything that's true,
I turn to you.
For the arms to be my shelter through all the rain;
For truth that will never change;
For someone to lean on;
For a heart I can rely on through anything;
For that one who I can run to....
I turn to you.
For a shield from the storm;
For a friend; for a love
To keep me safe and warm,
I turn to you.
For the strength to be strong;
For the will to carry on;
For everything you do;
For everything that's true,
I turn to you.
For a shield from the storm;
For a friend; for a love
To keep me safe and warm,
I turn to you.
For the strength to be strong;
For the will to carry on;
For everything you do;
For everything that's true...
For everything you do;
For everything that's true,
I turn to you...

I bought Celine Dion's "MIRACLE" CD (I think it's a work with Anne Geddes). I sing to my daughter and there is a wonderful track on there called "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". I also sing "My Girl" to her, which is more upbeat. One other one my hubby likes is a Billy Joel track called "ANGEL" or "GOODNIGHT MY ANGEL" (I think). Good for you in creating something so personal for your daughter, it's hard to find the time but in the long run it will be treasured by her. :)

This song by Sara Groves is one of the most beautiful songs that I have ever heard. I saw her perform this song at a MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) convention and I was bawling by the time she was done. Here are the words:
You Cannot Lose My Love:
You will lose your baby teeth.
At times, you'll lose your faith in me.
You will lose a lot of things,
But you cannot lose my love.
You may lose your appetite,
Your guiding sense of wrong and right.
You may lose your will to fight,
But you cannot lose my love.
You will lose your confidence.
In times of trial, your common sense.
You may lose your innocence,
But you cannot lose my love.
Many things can be misplaced;
Your very memories be erased.
No matter what the time or space,
You cannot lose my love.
You cannot lose,
You cannot lose,
You cannot lose my love.

There's an old song by Sandi Patti called the Cradle Song that's slow and sweet. Here are the lyrics (found on a website with a 10-second search)... perhaps you can find it to listen to somewhere:
I watch beside your cradle
Your face touched by the moon
My heart just aches and trembles
With all my love for you
Your eyes shine like your Father's
That nose looks just like me
I stare in awe and wonder
At such a mystery
How God can touch the love of a man and wife
And blossom it into the breath of life
Just look at this life
We want you to understand
You rest in His loving hands
For you are Jesus' little lamb
Our eyes are filled with dreaming
We want so much for you
But we might fail you often
Before your life is through
Only your Heav'nly Father
Can hear you ev'ry prayer
When we are just a mem'ry
Your Lord will still be there
So on our knees we pray this cradle song
That you'll always know the Lord will keep you strong

"Is this the little girl I carried, Is this the little boy at play. I don't remember growing older. When did they...." Some of the words. I dunno if those will work for you, but those would be a couple suggestions from me. I hope your project turns out nicely for you!
