Son Throws up When He Drinks Certain Juices.

I'm really concerned about an allergy to certain juices for my one year old son. Everytime he drinks a Cherry flavored juice he throws up. At first I thought he had an upset tummy or his teeth were bothering him and that was what was causing the vomiting. When he ran out of cherry juice last time he stopped throwing up as he was drinking apple juice. Then I went to the grocery store and bought him some more cherry flavored juice and he started throwing up again. Seriously, it's everytime he only drinks that. If he drinks plain apple or grape juice no stomach problems. I bought the Juicy Juice 100% Cherry juice and he loves it but about 10 minutes after he drinks it he throws it all up. I haven't fed him anything that I can think of with cherries in it so I'm not sure if it's just the juice with cherries or if he would throw up with anything that he ate that has cherries. Has anyone else had this type of problem with their child drinking or eating certain things and it not agreeing with them? Should I consider this a food allergy? If it is an allergy is it something he will outgrow as his tummy continues to mature? Oh, and what's weird is the other day it was hot outside and I poured him a cup of cherry Kool-aid to see if he could tolerate it - and we had no problems. So I'm thinking it's the real cherries that are inducing this.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

First of all I want to thank everyone for their responses. I would like to say that my concern must have been conveyed in the wrong way in that I'm not constantly giving my child cherry juice. I gave it to him the first time and thought the vomiting was from a stomach virus or from an upset tummy he gets when he is teething, not from the cherries. It was weeks before I gave it to him again and noticed the second time that I gave it that he was throwing up again. I did not give it repeatedly in between giving him grape and apple juice to see if it was an intolerance. I just observed that he wasn't vomiting when he got the grape or apple juice in the same day. I was just asking if anyone else had a child with the same type of intolerance. I do have an older child that likes Cherry flavored juicy juice and that's why I have it. I'm not a SAHM - I work full-time and my son is in childcare during the day with other children and they provide juice. He is also in the nursery at church where they provide juice. Since he's done this all of 3 times, I wanted to see if others experienced the same thing. I'm not the type of parent that would give my child something that would continue to make him sick. As for the kool-aid many of you assume that I'm putting sugar in it and that's not true - I put Splenda in it and it's not something unhealthy. I don't like artificial sweetener and therefore will not give him Crystal Light. Again, the question was to ask if others had experience with this with any of their children, and if it was an allergy. It was not a question of should I stop giving it to him. I'm a pretty competent person that knows I shouldn't keep giving my child something that's going to make him sick.

I would stop giving him juice. Juice is not healthy for kids or adults for that matter. My pediatrician is really against juice for kids. I also think that if you don't get them used to drinking water at an early age it will be difficult to get them to drink water later -- they will always want high calorie sweet drinks. I give my son juice here and there but it is usually when we go out to eat as a special treat and I don't buy it for home.

I'd stop giving him that juice -- and perhaps all juice, or at least water it down. He may be reacting to the cherry juice, or just to all the sugar that is in juice (look at the labels -- even if it is natural sugar, it's still sugar, and too much can make you sick). He may suck it down so fast that it makes him sick, or he just drinks too much of it and it makes him sick. My older son did that one time -- I had a little juice left, so I filled up three juice cups (half juice, half water), and I expected him to suck one down like he always did, leave one for his little brother, and drink part of the third and stop when he was full or satiated. Wrong! I came back in the room a few minutes later, and he had drunk two and a half cups! He threw up within a couple of minutes after that -- his stomach was just too full!

perhaps an allergy, but something you should quit giving it to him. Why does it really matter... just stop giving him cherry. I havent had coconut in 49 years and it never hurt me or drew concern. Why do you seem drawn to keep giving it to him? Do you like Cherry? I say, A., dont stress or worry about it, just stop giving him cherry!!

Jeeze, just STOP giving him anything with cherries in it and leave it at that! There are 20 other Juicy Juice flavors to choose from! Dont' keep trying it and wondering if it will just go away, you could send him into Anaphylaxis shock!!
Kids can have a reaction to all kinds of foods and drinks and some are eventually outgrown, but this seems pretty severe. Just leave the cherries alone form here on out. It's not like it's necessary for him to have cherries!

My daughter drinks watered down apple juice and when I couldn't get a hold of our normal brand I bought juicy juice instead. She threw up and had explosive diarrhea while she was drinking that juice. It took me a day or two to realize that was the only change that could be causing such a violent reaction. Maybe it's not cherries but the brand of juice. The "juice" my daughter drinks is 90-95% water with a splash of juice for flavor and it caused her problems. I think your best bet is to just not give it to him and if you feel strongly about him drinking cherry juice maybe you can find another brand to try. Good luck.

I can totally relate. My daughter has issues with strawberry flavor. We figured it out after she threw up a couple times after eating a strawberry nutrigrain bar. The kicker is that she can eat real strawberries with no problem. It also isn't the red dye in her case because the strawberry/kiwi kool-aid cooler is green and it made her throw up. We just avoid any candy, suckers, drinks or food with strawberry. She is now old enough that she knows not to eat it. She sometimes has a better memory than me! We have tried to give her stuff occasionally to see if she has grown out of it, but now she is 5 and she doesn't want to throw up so she won't even try to see if still causes problems. My advice would be to try giving him the real cherry and see if pukes. Honestly it is the only way to figure it out. If he doesn't, then just avoid that juice or see what else is in the juice that could be causing the problem. Good Luck!!

Our youngest son had a problem with any red drinks when he was about that age. I think it may have been the dye or something. He's 12 now and doesn't have a problem, so he obviously grew out of it.

My daughter throws up after drinking Crystal Light, I think it is the acidity of the drink. Do you think it is possible that your son is having a reaction to the acidity in the cherry juice?

Whoaw. You think Splenda, or any other artificial sweetener is healthy? They are far from it. I would never consider giving any child (much less an adult) a product w/ any type of artificial sweetener in it. My goodness, Kool Aid consumption would be a much greater concern than sugar. Sugar occurs naturally, and is not toxic. As someone that has experienced very adverse reactions to very small amounts of artificial sweeteners, I can tell you they are all not good or safe for consumption. Frankly, in our house, foods w/ added processed sugar is rarely consumed to minimize yeast in the body, not because it's that unhealthy. If you go whole as much as possible, you don't have to worry much.

Here's a brief snippet about Splenda.

Splenda. Is It REALLY Sugar?

There is no question that sucralose starts off as a sugar molecule, it is what goes on in the factory that is concerning. Sucralose is a synthetic chemical that was originally cooked up in a laboratory. In the five step patented process of making sucralose, three chlorine molecules are added to a sucrose or sugar molecule. A sucrose molecule is a disaccharide that contains two single sugars bound together; glucose and fructose.

The chemical process to make sucralose alters the chemical composition of the sugar so much that it is somehow converted to a fructo-galactose molecule. This type of sugar molecule does not occur in nature and therefore your body does not possess the ability to properly metabolize it.

Below are just of few online resources which other moms may read to start educating themselves about this product and artificial sweeteners.

Sorry to go on so much, but this is one topic that I feel is worth speaking up about. I hope this info is helpful to at least one mom out there. Just cause the FDA approves it, doesn't mean it is safe. Not to mention, these products can actually cause most users to crave unhealthy foods. In turn, causing weight gain, or much worse health problems. If you don't think so, just try living without it for several weeks.

You seem to have answered your own question.

regardless of it it's an allergy, he obviously can not tolerate it, so don't give it to him anymore.

You can either call his doctor to talk about it or mention it to the doctor at your next regular visit.

My son can't have Ovaltine chocolate mix of all things, because he is sensitive (not allergic) to the malt in it.

Oh, and please don't give your 1 year old (or the 8yr old) koolaid when it's hot. It's basically sugar water with a little artificial flavoring. Sugar doesnt help hydrate and will actually do the opposite. Regular water is best. My 8 yr old son likes crystal light added to his water for flavor. It's artificial too, which I dont like much, but at least it's not full of sugar (which adds fat calories, rots teeth, etc). If your kids dont like water, regular juice is a much healthier choice and the sugar content is far lower than kool-aid :)

It could be the cherries, but it could be another ingredient in Juicy Juice. That stuff contains either corn syrup or high fructose corn syrup, and many people are allergic to corn (which, unfortunately, is in much of our processed food these days). I would suggest reading the labels of what he can and can't drink and do a process of elimination.

I know that I personally cannot drink orange or grapefruit juice with out upsetting my stomach, not usually throwing up but definetly feeling like it. Apple and grape I can drink small amounts fine but if I drink a whole lot it bothers me. I would just stay away from cherry juice and juice that has cherry in it. Reintroduce it in 6 mos and see what happens. If it bothers him then I would talk to the dr. about food sensitivites and allergies.

It may be an intolerance (much like lactose intolerance, which is not an allergy to milk, but the body doesn't make lactase to digest the milk sugar...)

It is a common misconception that juice is good for kids (or adults). Juice isn't much better than koolaid. It's the sugar and reconstituted water from fruit. He'd be better off drinking water, and eating real fruit (not cherries, obviously), especially if his body is reacting this way.

As the other mom said, I think you answered your own question. Kuddos to you for the trial and error. I personally don't like kool-aid unless I sweeten it. I have personal issues with the artificial sugars and of course regualr sugar can cause other problems...joys of being a nurse and a mom! Anyway, he may or may not be allergic to the cherries. It could just be something in the juice. Do you give him juicy juice apple?? or other flavors? Sometimes it's the products in the specific brand. And of course, it could be cherries. I would avoid them for awhile, mention it to your doctor, and in another 6 or 7 months maybe introduce it again. Our bodies can change their allergic responses. Like with me, I like to drink bourbon and wine. Sometimes I have a reaction and start itching all over my face and sometimes I don't. I have no idea what it is. I can drink from the same container at different times and not have any problems. May be related to something I ate before, I don't know. I hope this helps and great job, Mom!
