Something Other than the Old Cookie and Snicker Salad.

I am preparing to go to a family reunion, for four days each family group (7 kids) have to prepare a lunch or supper meal for that day. Anyways all the salads I make are ones I've inherrited from the aunts, lol. So I would love to show up with something other than a cookie salad (striped cookies, v. pudding, and cool whip) or snicker salad. Any suggestions on a dessert salad recipe that's been a hit for you? Thanks.

I knew you guys would have some awesome ideas, now my problem is choosing which one to do!! Thanks, lol.

A snicker salad is made with 12ounce cool whip and then you cut up 6 snicker bars bite size (or cut up the bite size ones) and cut up 2-3 granny smith apples bite size and then mix together. Yummy=)

If it doesn't have to be a salad, Rice Krispie bars are always a hit and easy and not too messy.

Martha Stewart has a great website with lots of cool things.
Rachel Ray has great ideas too.

Have fun!

This is not exactly a desert salad, but it does have a lot of fruit in it!
Romaine lettuce torn into bite size pieces
Fresh strawberries cut in half
Blueberries
Pineapple tidbits
Mandarin oranges
Pecans
Poppyseed dressing.
Combine all the ingredients in the ratio and quantity that you prefer. Chill before serving.

I have a favorite chicken/wild rice salad that I make. I don't have a recipe for it, but its basically pretty easy. I cut up and cook a package of chicken breasts and let them cool. I cook white and wild rice (you can buy as a mixed bag) and add that to the chicken. I then cut up red grapes, apples, mandarin oranges and mix with miracle whip to moisten. I also have put almond slices in it too. You can pretty much add any kind of fruit you want. Its really yummy! Have fun!

This is my favorite dessert salad, and my family all loves it.

1 cup milk
1 cup sour cream
1 8oz pkg instant vanilla pudding
mix those together til smooth

Add (drained)
1 15oz can crushed pineapple
1 15oz can fruit cocktail
1 8oz can mandarin oranges
sometimes I add a jar of maraschino cherries

mix all together, refridgerate for about an hour, serve chilled. I may not have the size of the cans exactly right, but they are pretty close to that! This recipe is easy to double, and easy to prepare. Hope it helps & have fun with your family!

My favourite new dessert salad is Peach Pie Salad from a Jean Pare Salads cookbook. It's really easy to prepare and tastes fantastic!

Peach pie filling (19 oz)
Pineapple tidbits, drained (14 oz)
Fruit cocktail, drained (14 oz)
bananas, sliced 2
seedless green grapes 1 cup
small marshmallows 1 cup

Put pie filling into bowl. Stir in drained pineapple and fruit cocktail. Add sliced bananas. Add grapes and marshmallows. Stir together. Turn into a pretty serving bowl and chill several hours before serving. Serves 15.

Sometimes I have trouble finding the size of cans the recipe asks for but as long as they are close to that size it always seems to turn out just fine. Enjoy!

My kids love pasta salads, especially if you make them with the "fancy" noodles like rotini or bowties. I just cook the pasta, add cherry tomatoes, black olives, cubed cheddar and some Italian dressing. You can really use whatever veggies your kids like (broccoli, green peppers, frozen peas, etc.)

It's more of a dessert, but they love it. Take an angel food cake and cumble it up. Take one cup powdered sugar, 8 oz cream cheese (softened) and a tub of cool whip (thawed) mix it all up then add the angel food cake. Fold that in and put in 9 x 13 pan. Top with your favorite pie filling. I usually use strawberry or blueberry. Enjoy.

You might try a Waldorf salad--there are a lot of recipes out there on the internet and it's a nice salad with apples, celery, walnuts, grapes, sometimes onion, and a little mayo and sugar. Good luck and enjoy your family reunion!

I recently found this to be a hit at the last family picnic - fresh fruit in either bite size pieces or whole like strawberries and blueberries with a dip that tastes like cheesecake and then graham cracker and/or oreo crums to dip in after the wet dip - makes mini cheesecakes

Dip
8 oz cream cheese
2/3 cup sour cream
2 tsp almond extract
2/3 cup powdered sugar

first mix cream cheese until smooth than add rest of ingredients. chill. use toothpicks to dip first in cheese dip then crums of your choice.

I have a new favorite "salad" that is nice and light and refreshing. It is an apple salad and it's super easy to make. Depending on how many people you have, you might need to make a few batches. I am a Weight Watchers member so it's also good for those trying to watch what they eat.

20oz can of crushed pineapple with juice
1 lg pk (or 2 small) fat-free, sugar-free vanilla pudding mix (dry mix)
Mix them together and add:
3 Cups diced apples
8 oz fat free cool whip
Mix and let chill for at least 2 hours
(For Weight Watchers 1 cup = 2 points)

I absolutely love this salad! Have fun with your family!

Cherry Jello (the large box) use coke instead of the cold water, when it is partially set add a can of cherry pie filling, let set over night & spread coolwhip & cream cheese (1 to 1 ratio) mixture on top. You can add nuts to the topping if desired.

My grandma always makes 2 different salads whenever we have a meal at her house. They don't take very long to make and are extremely easy. This first one is called watergate salad. It has 1 package pistachio pudding, 1 small can of crushed pineapple, 1 tub of cool whip and some marshmallows. Just put mix the cool whip and pudding together in a bowl, then add the pineapple (drained) and add a handful or two of marshmallow. Stir all together and it is ready to serve. The next one is called whipped jello. It has 3 packages of sugar free cherry jello, 1 tub of cool whip and some marshmallows. You make the jello as stated on the box and do it the quick set method. Pour into a bowl. Once the jello begins to thicken dump the cool whip into the jello. (it will obviously have little chunks of jello in it) sprinkle with some marshmallows and refridgerate. I hope this helps. These are both a big hit at any of my family get-togethers!

I like to make a strawberry trifle.
Cut up 2 Sarah Lee pound cakes
strawberries
2 pkg. vanilla pudding (mixed with milk - amount on pkg)
8 oz cool whip
strawberry glaze

Then you layer pound cake, pudding, strawberries, glaze, cool whip and then repeat layers. Put it in a pretty clear bowl to see the layers and you are set!

This one is very good with some fruit too...

Pretzel-Pineapple Salad
2 cups crushed pretzels
1 cup sugar
1 cup melted butter
8 oz. cream cheese
3/4 cup powdered sugar
1-12oz. cool-whip
1 large can crushed pineapple
1 large can tidbit pineapple
1 regular can chunk pineapple

Topping: combine pretzels with butter and sugar. Spread on a cookie sheet and cook at 350 degrees for 7 min. Stir, cool, & save to dump in just before serving.

Salad: combine cream cheese & powdered sugar until creamy. Add cool-whip & stir. Dump in drained pineapple. Keep in fridge until ready to serve.

Hope this helps! It is a real crowd pleaser and pretty simple to make.

Have fun at the party!

Fruit Cookies:
Some people make this like bars, but baking the cookies individually works well too!
Bake sugar cookies and "frost" with strawberry cream cheese.
Slice strawberries and kiwi lenght wise and put them on top of your cookies. You can also add rasberries, blueberries. Any type of fruit tastes great on these cookies! You can make them the night before and refrigerate and they hold well.

I was going to tell you the pineapple pretzel salad is always a giant hit for me, but it looks like about a million mamasource mamas have beaten me to it ... I do however like to increase the amount of cream cheese and reduce the amount of cool whip. Another dessert salad that has alot of admirers is:

Raspberry Pretzel Salad

Crust: 2C crushed pretzels ... 3/4 C melted butter ... 1/3 C sugar (Mix together, spread in a 9 x 13 pan, bake @ 350 for 6 minutes, cool.)

Filling:8 oz. cream cheese, softened ... 1/2 C sugar ... 8 oz. container cool whip (Mix cream cheese & sugar, fold in cool whip, spread over cooled crust)

Fruit Topping: 6oz. pkg raspberry jello ... 2 C boiling water ... 2 10 oz. pkg frozen raspberries (Dissolve jello in boiling water, mix in frozen raspberries until jello starts to slightly thicken & berries break up, pour over filling, refrigerate.

I'm sure with all of these ladies suggestions you'll find something to knock your families socks off! Good Luck!

1- 1/2 of 1/2 gallon vanilla ice cream
2 cups Crushed grahm crackers
1/2 cup butter (melted)
1 cup Sugar
1 container cool whip
1 hershey candy bar

Make grahm cracker crust - Mix, grahm crackers, sugar and butter together press in to 9x13 pan put in freezer for 1/2 hour.

Mix pudding and milk together mix until pudding is set usually 5 mins once set mix in 1/2 of the 1/2 of gallon of ice cream and spread on to grahm cracker crust put back in freezer to set and once set spread whip cream over top of mixture and shave hershey bar over top and enjoy! ***Keep on freezer until about 1/2 hour before ready to eat***

Hi M L,
Could you email the cookie and snicker salad recipes?

Also, a big hit here is:

1 tub cottage cheese,
one package of lemon jello,
1 can crushed pineapples
and a tub of cool whip.
Mix cottage cheese with the jello first, add the pineapples then blend with the cool whip. Let sit in fridge a few hours until set and it's a great refreshing salad, always a hit at our house.
Have fun at your reunion.
