I think anything you want to serve him is fine (even food that you've made for yourself), as long as it is a slightly mushy texture and cut into very small pieces.

My kids loved Cheerios (still do!) and our pediatrician said it is a perfect toddler food because they can't choke on them (what with the hole in the middle). You can put a little milk with them to soften them up first if you like.

You can give him formula or breastmilk in his sippy cup while he figures out the drinking from a cup skill, since that's a flavor he is used to. I would keep offering him water though - it's ok if he just wants to play in it for now. Both of my girls started out making the worst messes you can imagine when they were that age and learning to eat "real" food! To the point where I'd have to bathe them afterward to get it all off of them. It's all part of the learning process - while he's dumping his water and food everywhere, his little brain is going a million miles an hour! Try giving him a little cup of crushed ice, he'll love that.

Hi A.,
The finger foods I started my daughter with were overcooked noodles, canned pears in juice, and mushy, steamed carrots. She LOVED them! As for the juice, try putting a dash of white grape juice or pear juice in the water. I also tried several different sippy cups.

Have fun with the finger foods!

I had the same fear with my first daughter and am now right there with you with my second daughter, although I'm slightly less nervous. Let's see, at that age I did overcooked pasta and mashed potatoes - I think scrambled eggs aren't recommended for that age, but that would be easy to eat. Look that up before trying those. I believe I gave my first tofu and refried beans, too. That's my foggy memory. Now, my 11-month-old is trying waffles, toast, and crackers and is doing ok even though she hasn't a single tooth. At this age, it's mostly about learning how to eat and chew and whatnot, so variety isn't the most important thing. Anyway, that's what I've been doing.
