I have a 3 week old baby and Ive noticed that she has a soft spot on the back of her head? She has the normal one on the top of her head but Ive noticed this one on the back of her head too? and her skull feels like its lop sided there too? Im just wondering if thats normal? It feels like from that soft spot theres like a long lump going down to around her ear? its hard to explain maybe its just her skull trying to form but I guess being a first time mom I wonder about everything. if anyone else knows kind of what Im talking about and could shed some light on this let me know thank you

What can I do next?

Baby's have two soft spots the one in the back of the head closes the earliest and teh one at the top of the head I think can be there at two years old. My youngest sons soft spot in the back went away before 6 months.

Most babies have more than one soft spot. If you are every not sure then call your doctor. You are a new mom and right now no question is a silly question. You are learning as you go. The skull usually has two soft spots for room for brain growth. I think that if you start noticing swelling or protruding of the soft spot that is a sign of something. Call your doctor and just ask them to be sure. GOOD LUCK and congratulations!

S. P - Cast your worries away with a phone call to verify the below! :)

I am not a doctor, but have a somewhat similiar experience. My daughter was nestled down inside the birth canal for 3-4 weeks prior to being born, so her cranial bone plates/vaginal birth cone head was not going away in the first few weeks like a normal newborn. She had many of her plates overlapping, causing a 'ridge' in various places.

She is now 6 weeks old and the ridges are gone.

Cranial bones are very flexible and will overlap and will pull apart (possibly causing the other 'soft spot'). I would keep this in mind, as these bones do not fuse together due to child's head will continue to grow until adulthood.

I would call your pediatrician for peace of mind but know that from this email, it sounds normal.

I'm a first time mom too and we freaked out about it at first, but the nurses (we had many in the NICU) eased our minds, told us what was going on (that it was considered normal) and our little girl is healthy and fine. Very normal (but again, talk to your doctor). :)

I hope that helps!!!

ALoha,
Yes, babies have soft spots, as their skull is forming and meshing and growing. It takes several month....over 12 months give or take, to 'close." The soft spots are on the top of the head AND the back of the head. The skull plates can sometimes feel like 'ridges' on the head....this is normal. IF you have a feeling something is abnormal though, you should always contact your Pediatrician. You want to make sure that the soft spots don't feel 'sunken' in...this can sometimes mean the baby is dehydrated. Despite these areas feeling 'soft'...they are well protected....however, don't 'poke' it or anything. You should read up on it.... the book: "What To Expect The First Year" by Arlene Eisenberg, is excellent, for first time or any parent. The doctor should have explained this to you. They also check it at each well-baby check.

Hi S.,
babies do have two soft spots. The one behind the head heals first within the first 6 months, then the top heals around the first year. Their skull is still forming and hardening for the first few months..so dont be worried. If it really concerns yuo and you feel like something is wrong (your the mommmy trust your instincts) then consult her doctor and let them check her out. Good luck.

It's as normal as you are! All 1st time moms wonder if their baby is "normal" or some type of mutant. We find things to worry about, even when our baby is PERFECT! Your ped. would most likely worry about you if you didn't think your baby was broken! LOL :O) Congrats, and your a great mom! ~J.

Yep, she's fine. My two girls both had that, and like previously mentioned, it closes quicker then the top one, so most people don't even think about it, that's probably why you havent heard about it yet. And remember, the hospital staff checked her out completely before letting you take her home, so they would have mentioned to you if that was a problem. Enjoy your new love, they grow so quickly, mine just started crawling this weekend. CRAWLING! ahhhhh-off to vacuum, again.
