Sneezing, Runny Nose, Some Coughing with Congestion, Help a New Momma Out?

My baby girl is 6 months old, she woke up today with a little congestion, no big deal to me. I laid her down for a nap and then she had a runny nose, snot all under her nose. She sneezes like crazy. She coughs a few times, sounds like the snots going down into her throat... is this a sign of teething or is she ill? We are talking to her pediatrician tomorrow but I'm so anxious to know if any other momma's have had this happen to their little pea. (: Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I found out shes not congested its just because her nose is runny. We found out that she is cutting teeth because she doesn't have a fever. (: Thanks everyone!

Sounds like a cold to me. If she is having difficulties sleeping, you might want to elevate her crib mattress by placing a pillow under the mattress and on top of the springs. This will elevate her head to help her manage her nightime secretions abit better.

PS: Welcome to Motherhood! It's a bumpy ride at times but worth it.

The snot isn't due to teething. Sounds like she has a summer cold. =( Lots of fluids, lots of rest, baby Tylenol if she seems miserable. The first cold is probably worse for you than it will be for her! It's hard to see them feeling yucky!

You've gotten a lot of great advice as it does sound like a summer cold. Allergies can cause this to but it's very difficult to figure out what a baby is allergic to. My daughter is 10 months and just got over a summer cold with the same symptoms. Our doctor always says that if it's a cold it will be gone within 10 days. If it goes past 10 days, bring them in to be checked. Just want to add that when my kids get congested, I always use a Vicks warm mist humidifer in their rooms - bedtime AND naptime. Change the water before bed and before each nap. I have to add 1/4 of a teaspoon of salt to make the steam come out and humidify their rooms. I also make sure to always apply BABY Vicks to her chest before sleeping and before eating or drinking a bottle. I also attempt the bulb syringe - booger sucker as my kids call it - but that's a 50/50 shot as to whether or not the child will allow it!!! Other than that, she's 6 months now so she can have ibuprofen for discomfort which lasts longer and works better than tylenol, but most importantly lots of love and cuddling. Try not to panic...although I still do too!

Sounds like is having a bit of what all of us in the area are having..but I would take your darling to the DR to have it checked out. Could be just allergies but my neighbor and her son have just been confirmed with strep throat. Besure to have a vaporizer in her room to ease the discomfort and go to the dr just to back sure. Oh and keep the A/C on as much as possible right now. Allergy season is horrible this year!

She probably have a cold, or I know this sounds crazy but allergies and the Doctor will not tell you allergies, because of her age. You can alternate between tylenol and ibuprofen and it will help her sleep, just do that at night. You can also go into the bathroom and shut the door and run the shower really hot and wait for the room to steam up. This would help get the snot out of her head before it goes down her throat and into her chest. Just kind of pat her on the back like you do when you burp her while the steam is going. You can also elevate her while she sleeps just like you would do for yourself when you are congested. Babies don't like the bulb syringe but you may can get some snot out of her nose by sucking it out with the bulb syringe...baby section in the drugstores. Make sure she has plenty of fluids, formula/breastmilk and water is good also. You can give her water in a medicine dropper or a bottle. That may help her with some of the congestion. Good luck you are a great mother!! PS I mean seasonal allergies...pollen...pet dander...that kinda thing!

That is just a cold. Nothing to get worried about. My 10 month old just got over the same thing. He was cranky, but he's fine.

Call your peds office and talk to them. You're a first-time Mom and there is nothing wrong with calling your doctor. It sounds like a cold and most likely there won't be anything that they can do except to help with some of the discomfort (vaporizor, etc) but call and tell them the symptoms and see what they say.

Sounds like what my 8 month old has. It's a cold. I use a cool mist humidifier.

It's not teething. Teething will give them a runny nose, but it won't make them congested. Only an illness like a cold or something similar can make the congested. For now, just alternate tylenol and motrin (ibuprofen) if she has a temp (and remember to take her to the doctor for any temp over 100.4) and set up a humidifier in her room to keep everything moist and moving. You can also use a saline mist with a bulb syringe to try to irrigate and evacuate her sinuses. You can also fill the bathroom with warm steam from the shower and sit in there with her. This will help loosen up the mucous.

If she gets REALLY stuffy, meaning that it's interfering with her sleeping/eating/breathing, then ask you doctor if it's okay to use Neo-synephrine which is a decongestant that is administered as a nasal drop so no internal medicine used. It works GREAT. I was given some by the people in the ER for my son when he was 4mo. He caught a nasty out-of- state bug from my step-son that none of us had any immunity to. He needed breathing treatments and they gave me the Neo-synephrine to administer at home. You can only use it for three days though until you need to take a break because if you go for longer it can cause rebound stuffiness. It can be purchased over the counter at most pharmacies. Some pharmacists keep it behind the counter and some don't; you'll have to ask.

Do check into allergies too. Don't forget that. It could be anything from your detergent to the dog. If this doesn't resolve itself in the next week or so, definitely talk to your doc about some allergy tests.
