Snaps Won't Snap

My 9-month old son received a very cute romper outfit with snaps at the diaper area, but they won't stay snapped. Instead of snapping very snuggly and securely, they are loose and come open even with me just sitting him up on his changing table. Does anyone have any ideas on how to "tighten" the snaps?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone for the wonderful advice! It took about 10 seconds to hammer the "male" portion of the snaps, and now they snap securely. Tomorrow will be the real test when my little guy actually wears the outift all day. I never would have thought of this on my own, and probably would have ended up discarding the outfit. Thank you!

I took a hammer and hit the flat side snaps on the inside. It pushes the prongs in again. It made the snaps tighter but not so tight that they are hard to unsnap. Some of the overalls and jeans I had to do this more often depending on how often they wore them but it does work and doesn't damage the snaps like hitting the other side that sticks up may do.

I know that sometimes you can gentle hammer the snaps(the male side) and they will do better. I did mess up and outfit once doing this too hard.
Diaper pin it!

On the pointy side of the snap sometimes you can use pliers and squeeze the top to bottom to make the top part that goes into the snap section bigger just a tad OR you can pinch the flatter snap section prongs tighter. It's hard to explain, hope this helps.

If they are METAL snaps, you can tighten them by using a hammer & tapping the protruding (male) portion that snaps into the indented (female) portion. By pounding them, it flattens the "knob" just a bit so it is slightly more difficult to snap into place. If they are not metal snaps, I don't know if you CAN tighten them.

Lay the pants out on your table (which you've padded with a magazine or piece of cardboard to protect the surface), with the bump side of the snaps up. Then take a hammer and tap the bump. That should squash the bump just enough to make it tighten the snap. Try snapping it, and if it isn't enough, tap the bump again until it will keep the snap together.

If you look at the "female" side of the snap, it should be a circular piece of metal with little cuts in it. If you bend a few of the divisions inward, it will grip the "male" side of the snap better and stay snapped.

T. i havent found a way to get them to work right other then replacing them, and over the years of having three boys in a 4 year time period they each had their share of hand me downs that i had to do that with. I had found a snap gun in a craft shop and it works just like ear piercings. Hope that helps. Its a pain but it saved alot of outfits that i would have had to thrown away.

If you will give the snap part that goes inside the other a whack with a hammer, it will flatten it out a bit, and make it a tight fit. Just make sure you don't whack it too hard, don't overdo it! LOL

Probably too short for growing baby, and be carefull in dryer. But try bigger size. Good luck.

I've had this problem before and I just took a hammer and gently flattened the male end of the snaps. Of course, this will only work if the snaps are metal. I did this until the fit was tight.
Hope this helps

take a hammer and lightly tap the part that snaps into the other part. The little round tip is what I mean. Tap lightly as it will spread it out and if you hit it to hard it won't be able to snap. My mom did this years ago so I know it works.

I work with snaps in my job... when this happens LIGHTLY tap on the "male" side . That will flatten it out enough to catch, The springs have probably weakened. Pam L.

BTW- didn't know if you had come across them but there are also extenders for rompers that you just can't seem to let go of b/c they are sooo cute! They clip in place and go through the crotch to keep the shirt in place...They also work great for T-shirts if you want to keep them tucked into pants.

I was told they can't be tightened. My problem was with overalls, so I sewed them together and used the opening at the top. Inconvenient, yes, but the only thing short of replacing the snaps! ($$)
