I recently purchased some previously owned dresers. When getting them home, I relieze that they smell of smoke. The dressers are for my 4 yr old son so, I am not about to put his clothes in this dresser if I can't get the smell out. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get the smell of smoke out of wood?? I want to use them bc it works perfeclty in his room but I would die if he walked around smelling like he just smoked. HELP!

What can I do next?

Try putting UNUSED coffee grounds on a paper plate in the drawers, and let them sit for awhile. My aunt taught me this trick. Something about the coffee grounds absorbs any odor I've found so far out of almost anything. I had to use it in my filing cabinet. Good Luck!

I'm not sure if it's possible to get the smell of smoke out completely. I remember having a school textbook as a kid that smelled like smoke, even though it would have been months (at least) since it was in a smoky house. Maybe try stuffing the drawers with crumpled newspaper to see if it soaks up some of the smell. If not, are the dressers a type that you could re-varnish the inside of in order to seal in the smoky odour? Could you contact a fire restoration service in order to see what they use to remove the smoke smell from household items for insurance companies?

Have you tried using gentle sandpaper? You could call a wood worker or cabintry person for help.

If I remember correctly, a friend's sister used Simple Green after their housefire. She used it on everything - all types of materials, and said it worked wonders!

Go to the pet store and get some Nature's Miracle. Take the dresser drawers out and spray everything down heavily with the Nature's Miracle. Do not dilute. Let it sit until it is completely dry. If some smell remains, repeat the process.

Try a good wood cleaner, make sure to get one that doesn't leave a oily residue. Take the drawers out, clean every inch of the wood you can. Then if possible leave it sitting outside to air out.

Try this... set the dresser on a large sheet of heavy plastic. (You are going to wrap the dresser.) Put a plate of coffee grounds in each drawer and under the dresser. Wrap the the dresser and tape so that it is as air tight as possible. Leave for 3 or 4 days. Unwrap.

Coffee grounds absord odor (also good for that burnt popcorn smell in micrwaves). You might want to call a company that deals with fire restoration. They might be able to suggest something.

I personally would take out all the drawers and set it in the garage for about a week, each day cleaning it with whatever you choose (I like that Odo ban from Sams club) have a fan blowing on it. you can get it smell out but unfortunatley time is the only thing that will help. 3-7 years of someone smoking will not be able to come out in 1 or 2 cleanings.
I would give it a good 7-10day process
Good luck

I know that if you buy a house and it smells like smoke you are supposed to put fresh paint in the house. Maybe that would help with the dresser?! Good Luck!

Found this website http://www.ehow.com/how_###-###-####_remove-cigarette-sme...
I've also heard if you put fresh cut grass in a box and place it in your car it'll pull the smoke smell out. Maybe you could try it in the drawers??
Good luck

I wonder if washing it out with Vinegar water (50 - 50 if you can tolerate it less vinegar if needed) and then placing backing soda boxes in each drawer (box open draw closed) for a few days.

My friend suggested if it still smells after a few days to try 409 but that smell is strong too.

I would use Sol U Mel from Melaleuca. It's safe and non toxic as well So you don't have to worry about it hurting him in any way. Let me know if you want more info. We have shopped with this Green company for almost 19 years and we love all their products.

I had the same problem--beautiful dresser, but smelled like cigarette smoke. Clean the whole thing down with Murphy's oil soap, or other cleaner, then let it air in a garage for about a week.
