Oh, yes! My favorite slow cooker recipe is great for both cuts of meat you mention and it's super, super simple!

My husband and 4 year old both love it, and the leftovers make great sandwiches.

Here's a simple one that is so tasty!

pierce meat all around (I use 5-6 pounds pork shoulder or butt)
rub Hawaiian sea salt on it (can also use regular sea salt)
place in slow cooker and add 3 tbs liquid smoke
cook on low 10-12 hours, turning once.
(add 3 cups shredded cabbage to shredded pork one hour before it's done)

If you've ever had the kalua pig that is roasted in a pit overnight in Hawaii...this tastes exactly like it! No need to dig a pit :o)

Hi Sally, I puse mu slow cooker for different kinds of roast, I brown the out side of my roast on the stove, season it with lemmon pepper, and garlic powder and put it in the crock pot, what is really good is to add onion soup mix in your slow cooker, you can use all different types of dry soup mix, my family loves it when I do it with the onion soup mix, als add alittle water and the juices from the meat makethe best broth for gravy. Sweet Mustard Roast (from the crockpot365.blogspot.com)
You can use this sauce mix on either pork or beef -
1/3 cup dijon mustard
1/3 cup molasses
some garlic salt or powder...use what you have (about a teaspoon, I just sprinkle some in)
couple tablespoons of vinegar (I usually use red wine vinegar but any you have works)

Mix the above together and pour over the roast, set the slow cooker on low and leave it all day (6-8 hours). The first night we eat it with a veggie and rice/mashed potatoes. But then later in the week I mix the shredded meat with BBQ sauce for sandwiches.

My all time favorite crock pot beef roast recipe is using a can of cream of mushroom soup, 1/2 cup liquid (I use red wine) and a packet of LIpton Onion Soup mix then letting it cook all day.

Your MSG mention made me curious so I googled the Lipton Onion Soup and discovered it has MSG! Its the 10th ingredient of 14 so probably not much but you enlightened me today.

I'm going to check back and see what other recipes come through.

When you cook in a slo-cooker you can use the same recipes you would use for regular roasting.
I use a little water then salt pepper garlic (on beef) sage (on pork) poultry seasoning (on chicken).
Then if you wish you can add carrots, potatoes, or other veggies as you wich about an hour or two after you start cooking the meat. Of if you are starting this in the morning before work add the veggies all at once. With mine I have to pour the juices into a saucepan to make the gravy.

I make chalupas. You put 1 cup of dried pinto beans in with the roast, 2 cloves of minced garlic, some chili powder and some cumin in. Cover with water, cook all day. Shred the roast, add a small can of green chili's and some cilantro. Serve with flour tortillas, and fixin's like lettuce, tomatoe, onion, guacamole, etc. YUMMY

My new favorite thing is the Rick Bayless Fronterna brand slow cooker taco packets for beef and pork. I get them at Whole Foods and they are fantastic and all "regular" ingredients.

I have often done my own recipes, but these are just too easy and tasty!

I am cooking a boston butt in mine right now. I will pull it later for BarBQ for dinner.

All I add is salt, pepper, beef broth (you can get one that doesn't have MSG if you just look at the labels) and coffee. That's it.
