We have 2 triple sliders that face East. My sister suggested that instead of window treatments to have a company put on tinting. It's a 3m product she said that comes in a roll but I don't know anything else about it. It goes on the inside glass.Has anyone used this product and what can you tell me about it's cutting down on heat etc. Thanks. Also does it scratach easily? We really need some relief from the heat in the summer. Our elec. billl is rediculous.

What can I do next?

The window tinting is Mylar, just like for car windows, and it comes in various thinkness and degree of tint, both of which affect the cost. We have used it for years. You can ask a window tinting shop and they will probably do your home windows. The one known problem is that if your windows have a partial vacuum and a gas inside (modern windows have this), then there is a legal limit as to how heavily you can tint them because the tint, on the inside, will cause the gas to overheat and this harms the window. We installed all new windows, a light Mylar tint on those windows exposed to the sun, and cut down dramatically on the heat from the sun. Curtains or vertical blinds then take care of the rest, and our house is cool again, even in summer, without extremely high electric bills. Your power company will probably do a free energy audit, which will show you other ways to reduce your electric bill too.

We have this product on our windows and really like it. I would say that it is definitely a 2 man job and you need to use the special cleaner on it (the spray that is used to apply it). Windex will dissolve it. If you can't find sheets that are the same width or wider than each window, I wouldn't do it. It won't look as good. Practice on some smaller windows first, because when the sheets stick to each other and aren't wet enough they are ruined. It doesn't scratch easily. It should definitely help with your electric bill.

you can opt for a colorless type tint that still blocks like 98% of the rays that emanate the heat. Where I work, we had this added to our new building because there were so many windows, we could hardly see the computers. You could barely tell that the tint was on, it didn't change what you saw outside. I'm not a fan of grey windows, I like to see everything natural! I don't know of the name of the company or the tint we used, but I know we had 3 different co's come out and give bids. It was relatively cheap, considering we had a few thousand sq.ft of windows covered for only $1100.00. I would imagine your sliders would only be a couple hundred, and worth it. We had the windows done last July or August when it was hot out. After the application you could immediately feel the difference. We had to raise the AC by 3 or 4 degrees because at the old setting it was too cold inside! So it definitely works. Yes, it will scratch if you use the wrong stuff to clean it with. The company you use can recommend what to use. usually just a mild soap & water solution with an approved squidgy, the cloth or squidgy you use is key for avoiding scratches. I would suggest having a couple of companies bid for the job to get the best price. It doesn't cost you anything for them to come out to your home and look at the job. Unless your hubby is really handy and wants to do it himself, but the larger the window(like sliders) the more difficult. If you are concerned about your bill, I would say get it, you'll see a difference. I hope this helps! Good Luck!

Window tint on any window will help. Do you have window tint on your car windows? If so, then you know how it will benefit the house. However, window tint does not protect your privacy so if privacy is going to be an issue on these slider doors, then by all means tint them but put some fabric covering over the windows. When it's during the day, it won't be so obvious, but at night time, if you have lights on in the house, anyone outside will be able to see quite clearly inside your house. So, just keep that in mind. But yes, window tint will help keep your house cooler. By how much, I don't know those stats, but it make a difference.
