I know they say a year but so many people, including myself start earlier. I think you can start once they are rolling. My daughter is big so we were out of the sleepers sooner then expected. I put a loose blanket in, at about 9 months, which she doesn't even sleep under. If you are concerned you could always layer him. I put a onesie on and her PJ's which have the feet in them.

B.,
I would love to know the answer to this one - we use a sleep sack if a simple outfit doesn't fit the bill. We have on occasion used a blanket to cover his lower torso and below - he doesn't usually move much while sleeping though.

not sleeping now though!
Good luck,
M.

My son is 13 months and has been sleeping with a blankie for months now. It's a light blanket, made by Grandma and he loves it. I think it's pretty safe at 11 months. Just my two cents!

I usually started using a blanket when the baby could pull her or himself up. If you are afraid to use a blanket now just put her in long sleeved/legged jammies. However I am almost positive that there are sleep sacks that go beyond 9 months. Check out Halo's sacks. Babies r Us has many too.

Halo makes toddler sleep sacks (with feet so they can walk around in them). My daugher is two and we started using a blanket around 1 year but last winter, we used the Halo sack because we keep a cold house. With the price of oil, we will be keeping a COLD house this winter so I will be using the sleep sack for her again to be sure she's warm.

My daughter has always slept with a blanket. When she was a tiny baby she liked to be swaddled and now she sleeps with a soft fluffy blanket, usually over her face. She pulls it up over her head until she falls asleep then she kicks them off.

Blanket sleepers come in BIG sizes. From newborn to size
12 or 14. They are the best!

I had a crocheted blanket that had holes all over it. I realized that it was unlikely my baby was going to suffocate with this blanket, so I started using it around 8 months old. Once he could sit up and roll over, I figured he would be okay.

The Halo Sleep Sack go much larger than 9 months - they are great I used them until about a month ago. My son is going to be one on Monday and is VERY active. I decided that he could have a blanket in the crib. So I did give him a blanket at around 10 1/2 or 11 mos, but I would still be using the Halo Sleep Sak if he wasn't such a mover! The first nights with the blanket, I did check on him a lot, the blanket he sleeps with is maybe 2'x2'(not very big) so he can't get tangled. Good Luck.

I bought those footie sleeper pajamas for my son a few months back, and I got size 18 months, so look around. They make them for older babies now, and I even saw them last winter at Target for older kids, beyond toddler years.

You can put him in a sleep sack which is a "wearable blanket" : https://www.halosleep.com/products/results/?product_categ...

They come in different fabrics like fleece and cotton. My daughter loves it and I know that she's warm and safe in her crib!

I used to put my son in a sleep sack. They sell them almost everywhere. It's like a pouch that has holes for the baby's arms and the front zips up. It stays in place well and keeps the baby warm. I think the sizes start at small and they go up to XL. My son wore his at night until he was almost 2. Hope this was helpful.

As soon as your baby is strong enough and smart enough to move away from something covering his face he is old enough for a blanket. The danger with babies and pillows and blankets is they get covered and aren't able to pull the covers away or move their heads. At 11 months he should be sitting and even trying to stand and certainly old enough for a blanket. However blanket sleepers go up to sizes 4,5,6 and perhaps bigger.

there is no real answer to this it all depends on how you as a mom feels, both my kids have slept with blankets from day one....(i have the angel care baby monitor that detects if your child stops breathing ) i felt very comfortable with them having a blanket i thought if i like my balnkets to cuddle into at night they would to,
so there is no real answer it is how you feel/comfortable wise..
but fyi jcpenneys has the sleep sack right up to toddler sizes of 4/5t check them out it might help you feel better
good luck...

My DD has slept with a blanket from day one. It is pillows you need to worry about. The only reason to use those sacks is because they can't kick them off and get cold. If you are worried put him in winter jammies or turn up the temp.

the sleep sacks run in larger sizes. i have size 24 months at home now. and i have seen fleece sleepers in the children's place that go all the way up to size 4T. because i have an AC in his room, i do put a small light cotton blanket on my one year old. i leave his arms on the outside. sometimes he wakes up with it on him and sometimes he kicks it off. we both love the sleep sacks.

Hi B., I am sure I bought sleepers in sizes bigger than nine months. Try Babies r Us and Target or the catalogue One Step Ahead. My twins are 22 months and just started using a blanket but they don't keep it on all night anyway. I am not sure what the right age is for safety reasons but I think I read that it is over a year. Hi B.,

I agree with everyone who suggested the sleep sack. It is definitely a wonderful option. The babies seem to love them...it's probably pretty close to how cozy we are in a sleeping bag, only the sleep sack has more room for the baby to move around inside it. Love em...my 3 year old still wears one in the winter.

I love our sleep sacks from babyinabag.com. We have the winter and summer model. The winter model with a soft cotton lining(not flannel, I hate flannel) has alot of cotton padding insided like a normal fluffy comforter. The summer model is thicker than a sheet and made of a soft cotton. My son is 19mths old and loves his sleep sack.

My kids pediatrician told me at 15 months it was pretty safe to have a blanket in with the child. What we used to do with our kids was turn the air on for about three hours before bed so that the room was cool. Even with the ceiling fan on I have my nine month old in very light sleepers. Can you move the crib so that the air isn't actually blowing on the baby? That way you could put a warmer sleeper on and it should be fine.

Halo sleepsacks go into toddler size and beyond. My son is 20 months, weighs 30 lbs. and is over 35 inches tall and still sleeps in them. We have also started using knit blankets to sleep with because if they cover his head they will not affect his air supply.

I used blankets from the day my kids were born. I have 5 kids and 6 grandkids and never had a problem with them having blankets.

At 11 months he's old enough to pull a blanket off himself if he needs to. In fact, even when you do cover him up I bet he will take the blanket off himself most of the time.

I have been using a blanket since my daughter was born, and she is 6 months. We too have an air conditioner so I put her in footed pj's and then put a blanket over her, but with her arms on top of it. She ends up kicking it off at times so I don't think you will have a problem. Good Luck!

I started using a blanket around that age, maybe even a little sooner. It always made me feel a little better using one of those hand-knitted blankets that has holes in it, just in case it did go near my son's head.

my daughter has slept with a light fleece blanket since day one and she loves it! It is her woobie. Whenever I give her her blanket she knows it time to go to sleep. It is light and fluffy and I really dont believe it can harm her especially at this age.

I honestly can't remember when my daughter started to sleep with a blanket, but I think around a year old. As long as the child can take it off if needed I think it's fine.

At 11 months your baby can pull a blanket away from his face. Anything with holes or that is easy to breathe through is fine. I just would stay away from thick comforters but anything else is fine.

As a mother of four and registered daycare provider of many, I have learned and been taught more recently by the State about the safety of placing the babies on their BACK beginning at infancy. They may have a small blanket, or a blanket appropriate for their size. We were taught to place the baby af the very end of the crib, feet near the end, blanket placed on their chest, under their arms. When they are strong enough to roll over, your fears should reduce. Your 11 month old is very ready for a blanket. Just be sure it is not too big for the crib where the baby might get tangled into it. One blanket it plenty. May you and your baby's night be peaceful. Your a good mom for caring so much. R.
