Sleeping Through the Night? - Lubbock, TX

My son is 4 months and was sleeping through the night. In the past couple of weeks he is waking up 2 and 3 times a night. What could have changed, and what can I do to get him back on the "sleeping through the night" routine?

What can I do next?

I had a similar experience, and for my daughter it was teething, even though we still had a couple of months to go before we could actually see anything. To find out if this is the case, you might try giving him a frozen washcloth or teething ring to see if he calms down. If that does it, you know it's teething (if it just makes him more upset, he's probably hungry!). For teething I recommend Hyland's Homeopathic gel and tablets--they gave my daughter enough releif that she could sleep, without having to resort to drugs like Orajel or Tylenol.

I also have a 4 month old and she is doing the same thing. She has been sleeping through the night since she was about 4 weeks old and recently has been waking up 1-2 times a night. After a few nights of this she started getting fussy and grumpy. Turns out she is teething! SO maybe take a look in your little ones mouth and look for swollen gums or little bubbles on his gums.

4 months is notorious for sleep set backs. It's very very normal and probably has nothing to do with you and everything to do with where he's at milestone wise. Is there anything you can do? Whatever you can be it swaddling, rocking, shusshing or cuddling to get him to sleep again. No Cry Sleep Solution is a good sleep book with lots of suggestions.

Consider yourself EXTREMELY fortunate to have had a child, however briefly, that was sleeping through the night. Oh the envy. It's a bit uncommon at this age. Mine didn't sleep more than 6 hours until after he turned 2.

Good luck!

My baby has slept thru the night since he was probably 3 months old also but occasionally this does happen. Sometimes it's a growth spurt and he's wanting to eat more to build up milk-supply, or it could be that he was napping too much during the day so I'd adjust his daytime naps so that he'd sleep better at night. We've used BabyWise as a source for teaching us what to do when our baby baffles us. But sometimes you really won't know why your baby does what he does. Our son is 8 mths old now and sleeps 11-12 hrs at night so this phase will pass.

My daughter did the same thing at that age. It was because she was hungry, my milk supply wasn't keeping up with her growth spurt. Once she got back to getting enough calories during the day, she went back to sleeping through the night. I was told at the time that it is very common with breast fed babies, they naturally start needing more food about then, and sometimes it takes a little while fo rmom to catch up. If you compare it to a bottle fed baby, that is about when they go from 4 oz bottles to 6 oz!!

He may be going through a growth spurt right now and be hungry. Give it a little time and see if he goes back to sleeping through the night. If not you might have him checked to make sure he does not have fluid in his ears because my girls only wake-up at night time if they have fluid in their ears.

have you tried putting cereal in his last bottle of the night. all you need is just a little bit(1 teaspoon is what i started off with). i started mine on cereal in the last bottle when she was 6 weeks old. it might help your little one out. GOOD LUCK ;)

He's probably coming upon a milestone: his first tooth or something. My son did the same thing when he was approaching a milestone. Another possibility is is that he might be catching something like a cold.
