So What Happened?

Well, all the rain has dissipated that smell for now. I will hunt down the spot and try all these suggestions as the sunshine may bring it out again. I must have just missed him! Phew at least it didn't get me and the cat! Thanks for all the input!

Yes, I do and this definetely works. Set small bowls of vinegar around the house and the smell goes away soon. The vinegar absorbs all the smell. This really works. Good luck. B.

It should dissipate by the time your party is to happen. I have had skunks live under my house for years (I gave up the fight) and every now and then they will spray if frightened. The smell lingers outside for about a night and then it is gone.

I'd be more concerned with the fact that there is a skunk around at all. I live in the city in a dense area and can't control the habits of all people in the neighborhood, but maybe you live in a less dense area?

Make sure your trash can lids are on tight at all times and also look around your house to make sure there aren't any burrows or hideouts. Skunks are nocturnal. Someone once told me that if you soak a large rag in ammonia and stick it in their hole or burrow, they'll leave. I've never done this here as I don't feel like crawling under the porch, but possibly you can try this if you find a burrow or hole that is accessible.

I wouldn't want a partyer to linger around in the yard at dark and have an uninvited meet-up with your squatter skunk!

I have only ever heard of tomato juice working but who wants red juice all over their yard? I would think the smell would be gone by Saturday though!

Hmmm unless you know exactly where the skunk sprayed, you won't be able to get rid of the smell.
But, my friend Pam swears by using douche to douse the sprayed person/place or animal.
Go to the dollar store and buy a whole bunch of scented douche and pour it into a spray bottle and squirt away!
hope it helps

I like the vinegar idea! Put it in a spray bottle and spray away - especially if you find the spot they squirted. Pouring vinegar on my dog after she got 'skunked' worked (avoiding her eyes, of course).
FYI - Skunks are useful in the eco-system - they eat snails and grubs and other pests. You will never see a snail around if you have skunks in the neighborhood! So count yourself blessed! (a cloud with a stinky lining!)
Best,

C., SoluMel works on pet odors and is toxic-free. It also keeps them from going again in the same area.

When a skunk is near you can smell it.. I wouldn't worry about it unless it actually sprayed somewhere in your yard and you knew where.. Or u can't do anything about it.. We have a skunk that lives nearby and every once in a while late at night when I let the dog out I can really smell it.. no worries.

Call me country, I worked in tobacco as a kid in South Georgia and one day a skunk sprayed the tobacco picker. I went home with a horrible headache that day and smelled like a skunk. The tomato juice is what they told me to wash with and it worked. I feel for you. That is the worst smell.

We have a skunk that thrives on our yard. We've had too many grubs for years and it feasts here all the time. But we rarely have the skunk smell. (Probably because he knows his restaurant owner might get upset!)

All kidding aside, I have found that the smell usually passes in a day. I don't do anything to get rid of it. It just goes. But I also don't know exactly know where he lives, either. I just know he dines at our house. (I suspect he lives in the woods right next to our house.)
