Sippy Cups - Has Anyone Found a Good One?

Has anyone found a sippy cup they love? I have a 7 year old and a 2 year old. I've been looking for cups for my 2 year old and I'm finding they just don't make them like they used to. I know nothing will probably be 100% leakproof but they all seem to leak very easily and the lids are sometimes impossible to get off. Even the ones with straw are leaking on me...the drink comes back out the straw! I'm getting tired of wasting money on cups that don't serve their purpose. Thanks in advace for your time in responding. From a frustrated mommy.

So What Happened?

Thank you all for sharing your experiences. My 7 year old doesn't use sippy cups but I do still use them for my 2 year old. He also drinks from regular cups but he is a wild one and at this point, a regular cup is only a good idea on occasion. The last cups I bought him were the straw kind but I hate them. I like the idea of the stainless steel ones. We do have some of the Playtex cups left over from my older son but I haven't seen them in the stores. I'll keep looking. We have the Nubby cups already but he likes to carry them with his teeth so the spout is ruined. Thank you again for your thoughts.

I went through a bunch and found that the straw ones that fold down are impossible to clean and get disgusting quickly. We tried all sorts, and now use a Playtex insulated cup (looks like an adult travel coffee cup) for outings, but at home, I love the Take and Toss cups! They leak after a long time of use- mostly because my son bites them- but he is drinking out of the cups without the lids now. I like them because they're BPA free too!

We don't use plastic in our house, so we never used the traditional sippy cups. We use stainless steel cups (Klean Kanteen or Eco Vessel). At 2yrs old he shouldn't need a sippy, he should be using a regular cup at meals, and a water bottle type cup when out and about.

The stainless steel cups may seem spendy at $10-$15 each, but our boys each have two, and they've had them since they were 8-10mos old, and are now 7 and 4... so they don't wear out and are well worth the up front costs. And goin without plastic, so good for your children.

Believe it or not my favorite is the Nuby...you can but them for under $2 at Walmart or sometimes Albertson's. They do have the soft tip, so as long as your kid isn't a chewer they should work great. By far, the easiest to clean and do not leak! I always disliked the ones that come with separate straws or plastic deely-bobs that you have to take out and clean, those were the kind we used when my boys' were younger...daughter uses the Nuby!

I like the Playtex insulated cups - the lid has a "figure 8" shaped valve with two "plugs"- one for the sipper and one for the air vent. They rarely leak in my purse.

We've used the Gerber color changing cups and Playtex insulated cups for years, and they don't leak for us. It seems like they did sometimes leak when they were in the diaper bag, but we don't do that much anymore.

We used the Nuby ones and LOVED them, but the soft silicone tops eventually wore out. My sons liked to stick their fingers in the holes, which ripped them a tiny bit so they didn't seal anymore. And they liked to clamp them in their teeth to carry them around hands-free, which also ruined the holes.

Straw cups leak back out the straw because when the cup sits out for a while, the liquid and air inside of it warm up, increasing the internal pressure. That pushes the liquid up the straw. So when you see it starting to come back up, you either have to twist the lid off for a second to release the pressure, pinch the straw to let air in (works on some) or have your child take a sip.

The pressure problem can also cause leaking in regular cups, if they're upside down (like in a diaper bag), because the pressure builds up and can push juice out of the threads on the lid.

For your 7 year old, maybe get a sports cup. I haven't been able to get one for my 6 year old because they seem so expensive and we're unemployed right now. He only gets a sippy cup in the car. He just seems too old for it.

I now remember telling my boys that sippy cups are great because they don't spill when they ACCIDENTALLY get knocked over, but they're not totally leak proof, so please keep them upright. That has helped a lot since they were old enough to understand that.

We've used the Born-free sippy cup for water and haven't had problems with leaks. We did use the Thermos Foogo for milk, but had to be really on top of cleaning under the seal around the inside lid. I think we started giving our little boy regular cups (little plastic cups for water or milk) at the table at about 2, or maybe a month or so past his 2nd birthday. He's never really had a problem with spills, but he's also pretty careful.

Well it might be hard to find them for one very imporatant reason...At two years old your child should be using a regular cup (but im a mom and that leads to major messes). So you need to have your child drinking out of the cups with at least the flip straw. When you drink from a sippy cup for an extended time it can mess up your childs teeth. I learned that you have to pay a little more to get a better quality cup though.
