What are good brands of Sippy Cups and how do I get my 17 month old to start drinking more from one? I try giving my son a sippy cup everyday after lunch but he will hold it and look at it then tip it over and let the juice drip out.

The best tip I learned, is buy all sippy cups of the same brand, once you find one you like, and buy all the same color. This way you don't have to keep track of different lids and matching colors and such.

I bought every sippy cup in the market and the only one my son took, was a cheap cup from HEB. Dont know the brand, but they have a whole bunch and they are only $1. I buy them in all yellow, and it's only two pieces, the lid and the cup. No valves to keep track of etc.

Also, they don't leak at first, after 2 months they do start to drip a little if laying flat, this is mainly because my son bites them and tugs on them. But at $1 a pop, I just replace them.

Hope this helps.

The best sippy cups are GERBER® GRADUATES® SIP & SMILE® Spill-Proof Cups. They are the only cups have found which do not leak.

As for getting him to drink more, as long as this is the only cup you are giving him, he will get it.

I still have trouble getting my ten month old son to drink from a sippy cup. I know he's still young but I want him to drink more water since he doesn't seem to want a bottle much anymore except at night and for his first feeding at 7am.

I tried a few things that seem to be making him understand that he is supposed to drink from it and that it isn't another toy to bang on his high chair and throw on the floor. I took the stopper out of the lid so that he doesn't have to try so hard to get his water to come out. Also, instead of handing him the cup and just walking away I let him hold the handles of the sippy cup while I help him hold it in his mouth for 5 seconds while he takes some sips. I repeat the helping him hold it to his mouth about 5 times for every meal time except when he takes a bottle. I hope this helps.

God bless,
DW

K.,

I had good luck with Playtex brand. They have the rubber inserts. Put milk in the cup and that might entice him to drink it. They don't leak and last forever!

My sons never could figure out those sippy cups. So, I went to a straw cup with my oldest and in a couple of tries he figured it out. I just went straight to the straw cup with my second son and he figured it out right away!

Have you tried the straw sippy cups? Maybe he would like those better. To get my son to learn how to drink from one I put chocolat milk in there instead of regular milk. He really wanted that milk. Although now he only drinks chocolat milk but I don't have a problem with that but just a caution. I liked the gerber sippy cups the best, but now my son is older and he picks them out based on the picture not the brand and I find that they all leak a little as they wear.

You may want to try those sippy cups that have a straw on it. Some kids do better with those.

It takes time and different liquids. My son is starting to like the soft nipple ones. The hard ones he doesn't get yet. Keep introducing it.

We use Playtex cups for my grandson. My daughter spent so much money trying to find a cup that didn't leak and Playtex is what she landed on. My niece said she had the same problem and Playtex is the only cup she used for her son once he tried it.
I know someone suggested that you have him try the soft tip first but all of them seem to leak.
My daughter took my grandson's bottles away at 1 year and only offered cups. Since that was the only option, he caught on pretty fast. I know all kids are different but this was our experience. I hope you find what works for you and your son. Good luck!

Hello,

I just introduced the Nuby Flip and Sip straw cup to my 10 month old. First week she tried it she just played with it, didnt drink. I tried it again the next week but this time I made the sucking sounds and would hand it to her. She would try it and then hand it right back to me so that I can do the sucking noises again. Then I actually sucked up some juice for her and when she got a taste of that, she realized there was something tasty and started sucking to get it out. She drank the whole cup of juice! Next time she tried it (next morning) she still remembered and is now a straw sippy cup pro. I love this cup.

I've had the best luck with Playtex brands. I've started just washing them in hot water in the sink. I think that has helped too. I used to throw them in the dishwasher and I think it caused minor damage to the seal -- causing leaks. With four kids, I've tried all different brands. But have liked theirs the best.

I am all about the playtex ones. They really don't leak. And the stoppers are replaceable. The best buy for your buck in my opinion. As far as getting him to drink from one. I would not offer bottles at all. It's like when they don't eat, eventually her will get thirsty and drink from the sippy.

I was using Nuby (the ones with the silicone top) until my daughter figured out how to squeeze it in her mouth and let the juice run out...plus she kept chewing on it with her teeth. Since then I have tried the one's by Playtex with the hard nozzle (I think it's hard rubber, not plastic). These have worked great! They have a valve that has to be removed for washing, but it only allows liquid out of the cup if your child sucks on it. I've tried turning the cup upside down and nothing dripped.
