Sippy Cups - Fort Myers, FL

I started my son on a sippy cup last month. We are using the playtex first sipster. Its the kind of cup with a plug in it to avoid spills. My little guy didn't seem to understand that he had to suck to get the juice, so after two weeks of him getting no juice I took the plug out. Now when he tips it up the juice flows out immediately and he gags on it and ends up dumping the whole cup out in his lap! I didn't want to give him the juice in the bottle, because everyone says that will prolong him using the cup, but the poor boy needs some juice, so thats what I've resorted too! Any suggestions on a better cup? There are soo many out there to choose from! Thanks so much!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Wow! Thanks everyone for the great responses! I'm going to get the Nuby cups and see how they work. My son understands the concept of the cup and wants to drink from it, but the one we have now just doesn't seem to agree with us. Hopefully a new cup will do the trick. Thanks again everyone, I hope I can be as helpful in the future to some of you!

Hi K.,
Like you and many of the other moms who already posted, my daughter did not take to the sippy cup at first (or 2nd, 3rd, 4th...times). She didn't like the Gerber trainer or the Nuby and didn't seem to get how to drink out of it at all until my mom sent the Avent sippy cup trainer! It was great! It had several different nipple tops that went allowed her graduate up from bottle nipple to soft nipple like sippy cup spout to regular hard sippy cup spout. She will now take any type of sippy cup and has started drinking the straw sports bottles too (she didn't start doing that until about 20 mos. old) I am planning to start giving my 5 1/2 month old water in the trainer soon so that hopefully I won't have this problem again! It is very frustrating!!! I completely understand!!!

Good luck!!! Don't worry!

Hi K...I started my son on the Nuby sippy cup and he did very well with it..It was a spill proof cup, however, it did not have the normal valve inside like all the others..But it worked very well for my son..Hope that helps.

K.,
In my opinion I think that 8 months is too early for sippy cups. I did not start my son who is now 18 months until he was around 11 months and he did ok though, he useds the cup for juice he also uses the bottle for milk. I have tried so many kinds of cups and the NUBBY cups have the suction part made like the nipples ( soft ) and it helped my son to learn to suck from it better than those cups which have the harder part to suck from..(i hope you can understand what i am trying to explain,.,.:-) You can get this cups in Wallgreens and in Target. My son also likes to suck from a straw the hard ones. There are some disposable cups which comes with lids and straws in multi color. They are fun and disposable too. hope this helped!

My daughter has been using a cup since she was 7 months old. She is now 10 months and like you I ran into the same problem at first. I finally found cups she loves, and they are really cheap too!! I am pretty sure the brand name is First Years, they are the cheap tricolored ones that come in 6 or 8 packs. You can buy them anywhere and they are only like 3 bucks. They are disposible, but you dont have to throw them away right away! We wash them in the dishwasher and they last a while- they also do not spill- but I throw them out after a while because after many washes they begin to spill. Hope this helps! message me if you have more questions about them!

My advice: forget the cup for now, give him back his bottle. I assume since all you mention is juice in the cup that your son is getting his milk from a bottle? If I am wrong and he is breastfed then don't bother with the juice, just nurse him and let him get his fruit in solid form. Try the cup again after his first birthday. Your son will take the cup when he is ready.

Hi K.,

My daughter transitioned nicely with NUBY cups, because they have a soft silicone nipple. They are very inexpensive, $1.50 each, and available at Kmart, Walgreens, and most stores.

She is still using them at age 3. I like them because you can see how much liquid is in them. I will be replacing them soon because she put straws in the holes, and now they leak a little!! They are easy to clean, just pop out the nipple top and give it a good scrub to sanitize it. Much easier than the Playtex.

The only cups my daughter would take were the Gerber sip and snack cups. They are really great because they come with a snack cup that snaps on bottom. I wouldn't worry too much - it'll take a little while but eventually he'll get the hang of it. Sometimes it takes a little while for them to figure out how the cup works. I'd be really careful about putting the juice in the bottle because it promotes tooth decay.

I had the same problem, so here's my suggestion. I don't think it's about the kind of cup, but rather how you train your son. I took the cup (I used water at first, instead of juice, but that doesn't really matter), without the spill poof plug in it, and poured a little into my childs' mouth. Not enough to gag him, but enough for him to know the purpose of the cup, then put the plug back in, and hand him the cup. If he doesn't start sucking the juice out, repeat the process. It worked for me, so hopefully it will work for you too. Let me know how it goes.

I dont remember plugs on sippy cups. My kids are older now, but the plug sounds like a choking hazard. Toss those cups and a normal one.

also every child is different you just have to try different ones to suit their needs that's what i did with my son but as the others said my son really liked the nuby ones and also the ones with the straw just keep trying different ones and dont give up
