Other than antibiotics, what has worked when the baby has a cold that continues longer than 10 days and is diagnosed as sinus infection? Any ideas?

What can I do next?

Keep everything rinsed. Use some Melaleuca oil in a steam inhalation. I use this for myself and my 13 mo. old daughter and it works wonders. The Mel. oil has natural antisceptic and antifungal properties.

Try a variety of sinus rinsing. We use saline drops a few times a day as prevention, but when my son gets a cold/sinus infection, we add SinuCleanse for kids and the Target Sinus Spray which comes out with more "force."

We try the homeopathic route first and we usually win. I have used Hylands C Plus Cold tablets or Hylands Sniffles and Sneezes. It can be found at Whole Foods. Both are natural cold/flu/congestion fighters. In addition we do saline nasal spray--tough for little ones but there's one at Walgreens that has a spray nozzle that fits into the nose that sprays a fine mist rather than a strong shot of saline, vicks, humidifier, probiotics, zinc, Vit C which there are powdered forms for little ones to boost their immunity. Also at Whole Foods or Vitamin Shoppe. Those are good things to start with but really are not cures once the infection sets in, they are more preventative during the congestion phase to prevent it turning into an infection. We take a natural antibiotic that's a little off the standard medicine path, but it has really saved us from rounds and rounds of sinus infections & antibiotics during cold/flu/allergy seasons. Too much to talk about on this site. If you are interested, feel free to email me. Judy

Who has the sinus infection? Is it you or your 18 month old? If it's you and you don't have any history of high blood pressure, you could try decongestants like Sudafed. You could even try nasal saline sprays or sinus rinses that they sell over the counter. If it's your baby that has a sinus infection, I'm not sure there is much more you could do other than a nasal saline mist and humidifier.

Look into the cause, not the cure. Frangranced items around the house, scented candles, plug ins, your own perfumes. Change your's and the baby's laundry products.( their face is on your shoulder)( Use Safe, and organic natural cleaners.

IF they have been on a lot of anti-biotics, you want to get them on some acidophilus in order to restore the nature flora in their system as well.

I gave this same suggestion to a Mom with a 3 month old and he turned around in 7-10 days. No more nose problems. Who cares which one casused the issue. I might have been all of them, who knows, at least he is better and much happier. He can now breathe when he is nursing.

I felt I had a sinus infection the other day so I asked my own doctor for an antibiotic. She refused stating that no one treats a sinus infection with an antibiotic any more because not enough of the drug makes it to the sinus area. I was really mad, so I asked about 10 of the docs I work with (the hospital I work in) if they would give me something. One offered only if I would take it IV (not likely) and everyone else said the same thing as my doc. ..."NO WAY"... I have icky drainage and feel I need something. so I am not surprised if anyone can't get anything. I would like t know if there is something natural. One doc told me to get a NETTI pot (what is that?) and use it. I will look for it tomorrow. Good Luck

Keep the nose emptied. One of those rubber bulbs should work. Use VICKS on a washcloth and put it between the tee shirt and over shirt...on the chest and back to help keep the sinuses open. Sinuses need to drain so wiping and teaching how to blow the nose helps. Make sure the shirt is ucked in so the child doesn't pull the washcloths out and smeer in his eyes. You don't need to gob the vicks on either. A little does the job. Good luck

An INFECTION is an INFECTION! It needs to be treated. I understand limiting antibiotics, that means don't get them every time your kids gets a sniffle or a cough. A sinus or ear infection must be treated with antibiotics.
Also saline drops regularly and a cool mist humidifier.
I am the LAST person to pump my kids full of medicine, but when its needed its needed.
Hope you babe feels better soon.

I had the same problem for the first 5 years. Finally I took my son to an allergist and once he started shots he never had another problem. Good luck.

Sorry to disagree with the homeopathic try other remedies method---if your kid has an actual sinus infection she needs antibiotics. If she has green or yellow gunk or blood she has a bacterial infection...it's not a viral cold that will go away with in 7 days. An untreated sinus infection can cause damage. Have you ever had a sinus infection? They hurt like the dickens...and left untreated can lead to other issues. Our oldest daughter used to get them, we would try and wait it out with home remedies until the last possible moment. I agree that antibiotics can be over prescribed---but sometimes they really are needed and this is one of those times. After a trip to the ER because she was gasping for breaths while sleeping because she couldn't get any air through her sinus' we realized that once the doc says she needed antibiotics...she needed them. Give your daughter the medicine and put on a cool vapor humidifier in her room.

Hi D.,
We just went through this with both of my sons. They both had sinus infections and one of them also had a really nasty cough and was wheezing. We did not use any medications...no antibiotics

We just went back for their 10 day follow up and our pediatrician was shocked and amazed at how clear their ears/noses/throats were. Sher said in this high allergy season, everybody is showing signs of something right now.

If you are interested in hearing about what we did, I would be more than happy to share - you can send me a message with your email address, if you'd like.

This CAN be treated without antibiotics.

Studies have shown that antibiotics do not help sinus infections resolve any quicker than just letting them resolve on their own. I would use tons of probiotic (the stuff found in yogurt, but you need it in higher concentrations than that found in yogurt when you are sick), plenty of breast milk and skip solids so baby is getting maximum breast milk.
