Similac Alimentum

I have been writing on here a bit about my son and his acid reflux. My doctor now gave him similac alimentum. I guess it is a perscription formula. He hates it. When I try to give it to him he makes a funny face and pushes it out of his mouth. Are there different perscription formulas that would have a different taste? Any moms try this with their child? Help!

If you are just giving alimentum for reflux, then you really don't need to be on that formula. I would recommend Enfamil AR (similac has a similar formula but I can't remember the name of it now). It has added rice starch to it that will thicken once it makes it to the stomach to help prevent the reflux. Alimentum is more for issues with milk proteins than reflux. I hope this helps!!

i switched to Nestle Good Start, with Comfort Protiens (orange can) and Zantac twice a day. and worked great.

I ended up using Nutramigen for my son with his acid reflux and he liked it and it worked. Not cheap though! If by chance you have Massachusetts based health insurance, have your doctor write a script for it and the insurance will pay for it!! If you a Rhode Island based insurance holder, you are out of luck.

Good luck!!

did they try enfamil nutrimegan?

My son tried this to and hated it as well. We tried everything out there and finally tried a homemade goats milk formula which worked great but didn't have the proper nutrition. on a whim we decided to go and get an organic formula. Baby's Only Organic formula Dairy was a God send. You can buy it at Whole Foods or order by the case on-line. It was really wonderful. The spitting up didn't completly stop but the pain did. Within a day of being on the organic we were off all acid reflux meds. Beware that not all organics are equal, baby's only is really good and all natural no corn syrup or synthetics.
Have you had a GI ultrasound done of your son's belly? There is a condition called Pyloric Stenosis which effects 1:100 kids, mostly boys, where the pyloric muscle is to tight. They go in surgically and loosen it.
Good luck!

Hi M.,

If all else fails, I'd suggest a prescription for human milk. It would be less expensive if you knew someone who could provide this for your son.

Good luck,

My baby took Gentlease Lipil and that seemed to work out. It is not prescription (neither is the other one. If you have your doctor write it as a prescription (even though it is over the counter) most insurance companies will pay for it. My baby got FREE Gentlease Lipil thru the pharmacy. Call your insurance company and ask if you have a formula benefit! There was NO Co-Pay! I got ONE YEAR FREE formula. Even if your insurance does not want to cover it I would still recomend the Gentlease.

Have you tried transitioning him into the new formula? My daughter is on the same formula for stomach issues. She takes 7 oz of formula at a time so when we first started I did 1 scoop of the alimentum and 2 1/2 of the old stuff for a day or two and then I did 2 scoops of the new stuff and 1 1/2 of the old stuff for a few days and finally all of the alimentum. She transitioned fine into it, so if you haven't tried that, I would give it a shot. Good luck!
