When teaching your kids how many words do you do a night? Currently we do 3 and review the ones we've done already. My kids are not deaf but we started teaching them basics as toddler 's and now are just going through the books cause my 4 yo likes them and thinks its cool. I also think if her interest continues we could nurture it further with local programs but you show her once and she has got it down!

So What Happened?

Wow thanks for the suggestions, we just have some basic American sign books I bought when they were fiddlers but I think I will look for the Dvds. We don't have cable so may incorporate them into their morning routine

When she can't reiterate them when asked to go through the entire list then it's time to stop introducing so many new words and start going over the old ones.

In sign language class we each drew a sentence out of a jar and had to do that sentence. The jar had hundreds of sentences in it. We did not say the sentence out loud but had to be able to say what it was if asked.

We also did song's using sign language as our means of communication. That way we were able to figure out the movements and make them flow better.

Using exact English sign language will make her able to fully use sign language as an adult. If you teach Amslang it is time to stop, she won't be able to communicate with anyone in real life. Schools are not allowed to use it, students must speak in complete sentences and such. Their interpreters will only use exact sign too.

I don't have a schedule...we just learn new words as they come up and use them often.

We used Signing Time! DVDs. Best ever!!! I don't remember how long we waited between introducing a new episode tho, sorry!

They also have Signing Time Academy. You could see if there is an instructor near you so you could interact with others! They didn't have this when my girl was a toddler.

I think it depends are you talking about sign language for baby signs or as a main form of communication (deaf/hearing impaired). I think that will make a difference in your answers. In regards to baby signs we did them as they came up and as I saw a need.

Sounds fun! The best thing is to learn sentences or things she can use every day.

Don't forget, an important part of learning Sign Language is education on the deaf community. While you'd learn about France if you studied French or Italy if you learned Italian, you should also teach your children about the deaf community.

I have a good friend who is deaf, and her pet peeve is people who learn Sign Language because it's "cool" and they don't bother to learn about the people for whom it was developed.

Have fun!
