My son got a fever of 102 last night. We gave him Motrin and put him to bed. When I checked on him he seemed to have a fast heart rate. I thought it might be because of the motrin. This morning he was acting fine, eating and drinking with no problem. Still has a fever of 101. My husband gave him more Motrin after breakfast and he seemed fine. I gave him Tylenol just a little while ago and now he has the fast heart rate again.
I was just wondering if anyone knew if this was a side effect of tylenol.

Thanks for the reassurance! He is better today. No fever and no rapid heart rate! I'm sure like most of you said that it was the fever. He has a check up soon and I will also talk with his Dr.

The side effects of a fever are fast breathing and a fast heart rate. These are not side affects of Motrin or Tylenol. My son has frequent fevers and we go through this often. Just keep up on the Motrin and Tylenol and keep the fever down. If the meds are not working to bring down the fever, or you notice difficulty breathing take him to his pediatrician.
My kids never had that reaction. To be on the safe side, call your doctor.
I think it's the fever, as well. I didn't notice it as much in my daughter, but my son's heart rate used to worry me when he had a high fever. I could actually watch his heart beat, per se, by looking at his pulse on his neck - and it was fast!
It could be if he had a slight allergy, but I know that sometimes when kids fevers spike thier heartrate increase, so it could just be a result of his virus. I would call your Ped to double check.
It's probably because of the fever. I have never heard of Tylenol causing that problem. Is he congested? Respiratory problems can also cause increased heart rate. Hope he feels better soon.
It is definately the fever increasing his heart rate (I'm an RN) It's the bodies way of fighting whatever kind of bug he has. Continue giving him motrin and tylenol to decrease the fever.
I clearly remember the first time I gave my son and daughter grape motrin They had both been sick with fevers I gave it to them about 10pm and at midnight they were running laps up and down the hallway it was crazy since then I have tried the non flavored and that seems to be better. My daughter is still very sensitive to all meds you might want to try some different brands or something natural from the health food store.
I see you've had lots of responses. The only thing I can add is that generally, Tylenol is better at controlling fever, while Motrin is usually better at pain and swelling.
Also: fever is the way we fight infection, so unless it's high or lasts a long time, it sometimes helps to let it go a while.
I would think it was a side effect of the temp. His body is trying to fight it off so then his heart rate increases to increase his metabolism to force whatever is causing the temp out. I may be wrong though.
The fast heart beat is from the fever. Every degree your temp goes up, your heart beats faster. Has nothing to do with motrin/tylenol, from what I was told.
It isn't from the medicine. Your heart rate increases when you are fighting a fever. My son had a virus with fever and we went to the doctor. She commented on the heart rate of my son and said it was a result of his high fever. I am sure when the fever is gone you will notice that his heart rate feels fine too.
