My son is five and a half months old and since last monday has had an upper respitory infecton. He has now begin vomiting at least once a day. Today he projectile vomited everything that he ate today. I took him to the er because he was choking on the phlegm and it scared me. I had a follow up with ped and my husband told her about the vomiting and she said he is fine and that I should stop worrying so much. I am worried about him becoming dehydrated because of his inability to keep formula down. He is usually fine with pedialyte but that sometimes makes him sick. Is all this normal for a baby with an upper respitory infection. He only ran a low grade fever for two days and after tylenlo went away.

What can I do next?

I feel for, my daughter was sick with similar symptoms. She was 14 months old and had never been sick before, the phlegm would cause her to cough and choke and that in turn would make her vommit. Her pediatrician didnt seem very concerned. The one thing that helped was having her sleep on an incline, (which she would slip off of about every hour and I'd have to put her back up) this maybe difficult with a five month old.
(I ended up switching pediatricians later because this one was never concerned, once she had strep throut and the doctor would'nt see her and I had to go to someone else.)

K.,
My daughter experienced the same thing at the same age. It was a bit more difficult for me cuz I was BF and they said not to due to it upsetting her tummy more and it would also create more phlegm (just like formula). I agree with everyone else about getting a new ped! My ped said to "keep an eye on things and if I felt at all uncomfortable with the way she was feeling to bring her back to dr. office or to the ER just to make sure she was all right." She never at any point has told me why concerns were not to be worried about. she has ALWAYS asked me why I feel the way I do and then discussed things further with me on why she felt different.... than me or why she agreed with me.

We (the dr. and myself) felt one of the reasons my daughter was vomiting was because of the phlegm. She also would choke all day long. We felt this was due to the "Post nasal drip" and it was the only way she knew how to deal with it.

I did stop BF her for 4 days and just continued to feed her Organic pureed fruit/veggies and water. It really seemed to help dry things up for her. I also used Saline solution for her nose at night, put her on a incline with her mattress and then took one of her thin blankets and rolled it to lay at the bottom of her feet to keep her from sliding down the mattress so much. I did not use Pedialyte because none of my children have ever been able to "hold it down". So I just used Smart Water... it has electrolytes in it too. I also used Olive oil nose spray and throat spray for her at night before bed to help "dry things out" The saline solutions tends to make things to dry and (my children have told me this)then burn while breathing. The Olive oil dries it up as well as keeps the areas moist.

Anyway... Hope that helps you a bit!
Good Luck

Try not to worry yourself sick but you really should go and see another doctor to get another opinion and rule out anything else. You are your son's mother and know him best, if your instincts are telling you something else may be wrong, trust yourself. If you're worried about dehydration, see if your son will drink a little bit water, that might help. I hope that he feels better soon.

I would get a new doctor, My ped would never underestimate what i think...I have three children 6,3,and 5 months and my daughter was projectile vomiting when she was first born and my ped right away sent her to a specialist who didn't have any opening for me but my ped called the doctor herself and got me in and it was all a reflux problem but could of been more serious, anytime my children have been sick for more then a couple of days i will take them and she takes me seriously her idea is i am the mother and i know my child better then she does so if you feel your child is in need of medical attention then your child needs medical attention and projectile vomiting is always a sign something is definetly wrong .

just my suggestion...I don't think that the vomitting/projectile vomitting has anything to do with the URI. My son had acid reflux and GERD as an infant and that cause him to projectile vomit. Maybe he allergic to his formula, it might not "agree" with him. The only other thing they told me to do was to put a generous amount of cereal in his formula because it helps to settle his stomach and absorb the acid.

Hope this helps!!!!

I would check back with the peditrician, or possible with another one about giving your son formula right now. My niece was about 5 months old when she got the rota virus (lots of projectile vomitting). When we took her to the ER they said not to give her formula because the dairy in it can cause her to vomit more (the same as how adults shouldn't drink milk when they have the flu). You may want to skip a couple days of formula and offer pedialyte and/or water almost constantly throughout the day.

Usually an upper respiratory infection itself will no lead to vomitting. If his sinuses are draining that could cause it, but it sounds as if he has the flu or another stomach bug.

I agree with Stephanie. ANy PEd who tells you not to worry about your son who is chockin on his phelm is not good enough to take care of your son. I would seek a second opinion by another doctor. Do you see a doctor in a practice or just a single doctor. Our Ped has 5 other doctors in thier practice so we can see any of the five just by asking. If you cant I would think about switching peds.

Hi K.,

Just a note about ensuring your little guy stays hydrated and doesn't vomit the pedialyte or formula: Give it to him 1 teaspoon at a time every 10 min. until he won't take any more. My son just had a bout with vomitting last night and that's what his pediatrician recommended. It worked great!

Good luck!

I just had a little girl that i babysit she is 5 months old. She was sick with a upper respiratory infection. she was put on 3 meds and the nebulizer. she was home for two days came back to me and i told her mom she sounded really bad to take her back. She took her back to the same ped and he sent her home. Well 4 days later she started vomiting and had the diarheaa this went on for 2 days i called the mom at work and told her she needs to take her back to the doctor. Well she ended up being hospitalized four five days. Get a second opinion any ped who tells you not to worry is not good enough to care for your baby. Its your job to be concerned. Just keep watching him if it continues another day get another opinion. steph
