Ihave a soon to be 1 year old and a 3year old that i took to the doctor yesterday for a cold and cough. Well there doctor was not able to see them so we went to urgent care, and there the attending doctor said that there was nothing that he can give my 3yr old but that my 1 yr old was wheezing a lil so put her on the nebulizer! after the treatment was givin he checked her and said he noticed her wheezing had went down and gave her an antibiotic to give her 3 times a day. But now my question is dose the wheezing get worse before it gets better and how long should the antibiotic take to kick in and start taking effect?

What can I do next?

The antibiotic should kick in within 24 hours. If you can, put a cool mist humidifier in their room too. It helps thier little lungs breathe easier. For the cough, warm some water and put a little honey and lemon juice in it. It's very nice on the throat.

I agree with Bethy but want to caution you to keep an eye on her. Notice her face and lips - any blueish tint is an alarm. Also, if her chest looks like it's sinking in, she is sucking up air and you'll need to get to urgent care or the ER. Breathing difficulty is nothing to play around with.

I know you're sad - hang in there.

Give the antibiotic until it is finished. Your doc knows BEST, but if the antibiotic is working your baby should be feeling better in a few days. Hope your other child gets better soon too. We would all rather be sick ourselves then to see our children hurting.

First off, please make sure to give her ALL the antibiotics until they're gone. People who stop giving their child antibiotics as soon as they start feeling better are the reason why we have superbugs that are immune to antibiotics. Okay, off the soapbox.

That said, my daughter had the same thing as a young baby, probably around 18 months. Seeing your child wheezing and having difficulty breathing is horrible. My daughter had stridor (sp??), an aggravated type of croup. After that bout, doctor put her on a nebulizer, which helped greatly. We also found that turning on the shower as hot as it will go and sitting with her in the steamed room for as long as you can stand it also helped more than the cold air treatment. Now, at 10, she has asthma meds that we give her immediately at the onset of any head cold. We know that all her head colds eventually get to her chest. Starting the asthma meds (albuterol) keeps things at bay.

Please also know that if your child gets croup (that barking type of cough), she will outgrow it. It seems like forever when your child is young, but it will definitely get better and more manageable as she gets a little older.

Hang in there, Cristy! I'm pulling for you, and hope that your daughter feels better very soon.

Take care
L.
