Should I Take Him to the Doctor? - Soldotna,AK
Hi Everyone. My 5 year old is sick with a nasty cough and fever. Believe it or not this is his first time being sick with a cough. He has had colds and sinus problems before but never like this. The cough started on friday and it is a wet cough. On sunday he came down with a fever and he still has one. It is about 102. I have been giving him advil and it brings it down. I was going to wait with taking him to see a doctor but last night he came into my room and I let him sleep with me. He was breathing real shallow and kinda fast. Since he has woke up though he is not breathing like that. I feel like so stupid asking but I always seem to take my kids to the doctor and it wasn't as bad as I had thought LOL :) Thank you ladies for any advice!

I wouldn't be as concerned about the fever as I would be about the breathing issues. If you look at his chest and he is "pulling" when he is breathing,or in other words, his chest area is pulling inward, then he is struggling to breathe and you should definitely take him in. Any wheezing or breathlessness, and you should take him in.

I would bring him in to be safe. I never want to mess around with any breathing issues. Also, a 102 fever is an indication something is not quite right. Take him in so you can feel better. Even if it's a virus and they send you home, you will know that and it will put your mind at ease. Take good care.

My doctor says to bring in my kids if they have a fever for 3 days. So if he had a fever on Sunday, Monday and today is Tuesday, you should take him in.

The breathing really concerns me - likely his oxygen level isn't where it should be. Doctors have a tool that tests for oxygen level. Coupled with the fever and coughing sounds like probably heading toward pneumonia - take him in TODAY, don't wait another night. If you can't get into your dr., take him to immediate care.

Load him up with vitamin C & any other you can get him to take. No one ever got worse from taking vitamins. & lots of chicken soup. If it lasts longer than 4 days go to the doctor.

Yes, pneumonia is very common this year and is nothing to fool with. My daughter wound up in the hospital quarentined for 3 days. Good luck.
