P.W. asks from Fulton, CA on February 07, 2011
Should I Read "The Corrections" by Jonathan Franzen?
I'm about 25 pages into it, and I don't like the characters, and I want to edit out about 75% of it. Should I continue?
So What Happened?™
Worth it, huh? I read a few more pages last night, still not liking it, but since three of you said to go for it, I'll give it a try. Thanks.

I don't waste my time reading books I don't like. There are too many good books out there waiting for me.

If it's like his book "Freedom," I would give up. I got about half way through that one, realized I hated all of the characters and gave up on it. Wish I hadn't wasted so much time on it.

I really enjoyed it, but I did find it to be a slow start. Give it a chance! The characters never become likeable though -he specializes in very "real" characters -as in, if you really knew what everybody was doing and thinking all the time, you probably wouldn't like anyone.

Well, it's been a while since I read it. But I do remember that the characters don't get a heck of a lot more likable, but they do get more compelling.
But I know the feeling - it's like starting a bad movie. Don't want to shut it off, don't want to keep watching. Bummer.

I couldn't even get that far...I wouldn't blame you if you bagged it. I was thinking about trying it again, but I just can't face it.
