Should I Have My 6 Year Old Daughter's Tonsils Removed?
My 6 year old has had strep throat 5 times in 12 months. I scheduled her to have her tonsils out and now she has not had strep throat in over 2 months, should I go ahead with the procedure?

I say definately YES if the Dr. is willing to do it. Every year that passes will make her recovery more difficult. At 6, she should pop back in no time. My strep was often corresponding with weather, but always came back in rounds of 6 + cases. It is very difficult to get Dr.s to take them out, but she will be much healthier afterwards.

I am going through the same with my son he is 7 and has strep throat alot. He even gets the virus in his skin where his hands and feet peel. The doctor tried to discourage us from the surgery said it was a serious surgery and there was no guarantee he would not get strep again. But my husband had his out as a child because he got strep alot and it was beneficial so we are going to go ahead on Feb 28 and have it done. We are also having his adnoids out at the same time to reduce upper respitory infections.

I would if it was me. It will help her in the long run. Might save her from more pain in the future. I had mine out about that age and never had problems again.

My son's doctor reccommended them to be taken out after his 3rd visit with strep(within a year). I would check and see what the your pedi recommends as well.

I have always heard that the older you are, the more painful the recovery. So, that said, now would be a good time. I had mine out when I was 13 and hardly got sick after that. Never got strep again... Worth it! physically and financially in the long run.

I got mine out when I was 18 and it was hell - I had strep regularly my ENTIRE life and my dr wanted to know why I didn't have them out when I was younger.
I would do it now and save a lot of grief down the road! I haven't had strep or any sore throats since having them out, and I was used to having a sore throat EVERY morning when I woke up.

Both of my children had their tonsils out when they were about 3 years old. I definately recommend going ahead and having them removed. When I was young, the military doctors required you to have strep 6 times in a year before they would remove tonsils. I was 10 when I finally had a 6th case of strep, but for YEARS before that I would have strep 5 times. My brother also had his out the same year. He was 5, and his recovery was MUCH better than mine. Definately the sooner the better. And you won't have to worry about her getting strep after (it is VERY hard to get strep without tonsils). Hope that helps.

I got mine out as a grown up and I would HIGHLY recommend doing it as a kid, recover is SO much quicker and easier! I also rarely get sore throats now and I haven't had strep since I got them out (11 years ago).
