I never liked Sketchers before but I found a pair with lights that are great. They have flames on the sides(black shoe) and reddish, orange lights around the whole toe area. They seem a bit wider than normal which suits him better. Stride Rite has them, too.

We've had MANY pairs of light-up shoes! I usually just get them at Target or Walmart because they're cheaper and they grow out of them so fast. We have gotten some at Stride Rite before as well. All of them have held up well and been very enjoyable! I have a 4 year old and a 2 year old -this year the 2 year old is really getting into them and the 4 year old continues his love of them.

We have bought shoees at Target, Wal-mart & Payless that almost always are light-up (they don't make them in bigger sizes so my oldest can't find them anymore). I've bought shoes at other places too that light up as well. You can find them with characters or without at all of those places too. It's actually rare that I've find sneakers that don't light up until they get into bigger sizes. All of them have held up fine, they out grown them about the same time they wear out typically unless they stay in a size a little longer. I have 2 boys and a girl.

I just bought some from Zappos that are made by Stride Rite. Haven't rec'd yet, but you can search for them online.

Target also usually carries some decent ones-one's with or w/out characters on them..for instance my sone has some Buzz LY ones. they were $15.

Of course you can get many of the character shoes that light up in just about any dept store, as many have suggested.

Like you, I don't like the Sketchers either. I just think they are so gawdy, especially the ones for boys. The ones for girls aren't so bad. And they're not cheap.

My son is also 4, and I've done the character thing, and they've actually held up pretty well. But another kind we've had good success with that I didn't see anyone else mention, is Reebok. They have light up shoes that aren't otherwise obnoxious. They are nice, basic looking tennis shoes, that just happen to light up. And a really neat thing Reebok has, LIGHT UP SHOESTRINGS. We just got a pair, and boy, they are so cool! They REALLY light up! Almost LED looking! And we've gotten them for $19.99. These are the ones my son has, in a size 1, so they come in small and larger sizes.

If you look at the additional photos and watch the video, near the end of the video, it will actually show you how the laces light up.

But there are lots of other Reebok light ups out there as well. Worth a try if you can find them inexpensively, as we did.

My 3.5 yo has had light-up shoes for the last three pair and he LOVES them! He has had Thomas, Spiderman, and Fireman shoes, and I think his next pair will be Toy Story. (I saw the size he will be growing into earlier today!) I have gotten all of them at Wal Mart for $10-$15.

We actually had really good luck with ones we bought at WalMart (Thomas, SpiderMan). They held up pretty well and are waiting for son #2.

We bought our son (also 4 years old) Puma shoes that light up. It is only the image that lights up and they are nice without being too much. We got them from Zappos and he loved them. Everytime he wore them, he got compliments from other kids and adults. They also have great reviews from other parents.

we go to Kohls, my daughter got some awesome toy story cowboy boots that light up there, in the boys section. She always gets her Carters light up shoes there, I'm sure they must have some for boys.

We liked the durability of stride rite and got them for $10-12 at Ross.
When they get really wet, the lights make a slight sound which I heard about from the teacher, but otherwise a great deal.

I got my son Toy Story shoes and How to Train Your Dragon shoes with lights at Wal-Mart for like $15 each. They are both very cute and he loves to wear them. They have spider man and some other super hero I can't remember right now as well. They light up when he walks. He is 3.5 and that is basically all he wears!!
