Shelf Life for Prenatal Vitamins.

Hi again, moms. I took the Rainbow Light prenatal vitamins when I was pregnant. After I gave birth, I forgot about it and didn't take it for a couple of months. It's still there half-full. Would it still be safe to take it? I'd like to supplement since I'm breastfeeding. But of course, I don't want to pass anything nasty to my baby. What are your thoughts?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you! It does have an expiry date. But I thought that's just for UNOPENED bottles. Glad to know it's still safe to use. Going to start taking it again.

I was told that prenatal vitamins are perfect for breastfeeding moms, too. The vitamins may lose potency after the expiration date, but nothing more than that.

I have used the same kind... they will be fine... even good for your body since you are breastfeeding... they would have to be yrs expired before it would be a huge concern.
I actually like the pre-natals a bit better than their reg women's, next time - i might just get those again..

take care

My doctor told me to continue my prenatal vitamins at least until I was done nursing.

Should be a best-before date on the bottle. But from the description of when you bought them, I'm betting they're still fine...

Most pharmacies try to dispense meds with a couple of years of shelf life remaining. But if they are in the original bottle, they should have the expiration date written on the side of the bottle, and might be covered by the label.

There should be an expiration date on the bottle. I am pretty sure it will be just fine. Most vitamins have a shelf life of a year or two at least.

I bought prenatal vitamins for kid # 1 (2004). When I found out i was going to have another one (2007) I just took the rest of those pills since I had a few left and then bought new :) He turned out just fine. I agree that they most likly loose there potency after 1 year so you should be good.

There should be an expiration date on the bottle. I'd go by that.

Most meds of any sort you can assume are safe for a year from their purchase date. After that, most of the time they just lose potency, rather than doing something really weird, but it depends on the specifics of what is in them. You can always call a pharmacist if you want to be sure.

I think its fine. I've been working through the same bottle for months now.

You won't be poisoning yourself, even if the vitamins are expired, but they do start losing potency after the expiration date. The most harm you'll be doing is not getting the full potency of the vitamins.

Our pharmacist told us that multivitamins, if stored away from heat, light and moisture, will not lose their potency or "go bad" for 3 years after their expiration date.
