I have a tween with oily hair. When I was her age, you could find shampoo for oily hair. I've searched and searched and cannot find anything. We've tried a lot of different things, but nothing seems to work. Can you please tell me what has worked for you? Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

She had been using a clarifying shampoo, but has made 2 changes suggested...1. shampoo twice, and 2. condition the ends only. Her hair is looking much nicer. Thanks!

Try shampoos with citrus in them like lemon or grapefruit, or herbs like rosemary. If a shampoo says "clarifying" it is for oily hair, Suave on up to expensive brands make them. Read the labels and look for something like "won't weigh hair down." Some shampoos are for normal to oily, they'll say on the label, she can also use shampoos for normal hair if she shampoos every day, as long as they're not heavy with moisturizers. Shampoos for "volume" are good, too, they don't weigh the hair down with lots of moisturizers. Pantene makes one called "Sheer Volume," Aussie, L'Oreal and others make them as well.

Shampoos with light conditioners built in will work better than using them separate, but if she does use a conditioner on it's own have her use it just on the ends. And, have her try a dry shampoo for when her hair looks oily but she doesn't want to wash it just yet. I got some last week by Suave (yes, Gramma STILL has oily hair!) and it works and smells great : )

My husband likes Pert Plus all-in-one (they have a moisturizing solution too). Then- Suave just came out with a dry-shampoo that works wonders! You can spray it in (like a powder), then brush it through the oily areas of your hair... I try to only wash the front and side part of my hair every day and leave the rest for every other day... That dry shampoo works wonders...

Good luck... I know the summer can be difficult...

You want to go for "clarifying" shampoo! I have oily hair and use Aussie brand Cleanse and Mend. It's in a purple bottle and I usually get the big bottle with the pump from Walmart. I also use that conditioner, but only apply to the ends not the scalp!
I have also used Tresemme (black bottle) and like that too! I really like the pump on the Aussie!

I agree with what GrammaRocks says. I would only add that she should make sure she washes her hair twice (lather, rinse, repeat). I just read an article in a magazine that says the first time you lather and rinse you are washing out dirt particles, hair product, etc. then the second time around you are actually getting to the natural oils that make hair heavy and oily.

Just thought I'd pass that along.

Clarifying and citrus shampoos work the best. Wash and rinse one time, morning and night. If ends seem dry a conditioner can be used after shampooing on them. When you wash, rinse and repeat it strips the hair of natural oils and in turn more will be made causing it to look oily faster.
