Severe Yeast Infection in 2 Year Old
Calling all mama's advice.....
I have a 2 year old little boy that has broken out in what his ped believes is a yeast infection. About 2 weeks ago he had a small raised red spot, we kept butt paste, desitin on it with every change. Suddenly last week he got small bumps above his genitalia and with in 3 days it spread down to his knees. We took him to urgent care last friday where they said it looked like yeast and gave us Nystatin cream 3 times a day and let the air get to him ofcourse. It looked very slightly better after 2 days but on day 4 it got worse! They called in Nystatin Ointment to try, no luck. By this past wednesday the bumps are getting worse over his whole diaper area, bum, inside & tops of legs to his knees and then it began up towards his belly button. Got him back to his ped yesterday, they did a culture but she feels it is a severe yeast infection. She gave a script for Vusion ointment which is $250 even with insurance! My husband hasnt worked in almost a year, we can't afford it so the ped is liooking for samples but in the meantime says to keep using the Nystatin. I just dont see that it is working at all! We are working on potty training since he needs to be diaper free anyways (not going well). he wakes up every couple hours over night crying "owie". My heart is breaking and I don't know what else to slather on him. We have done baths in aveeno, baking soda, both nystatin giving him probiotics and yogurt. Now last night we can feel little bumps all over his back and arms, they are not visible yet but I fear that it is the same thing spreading. His ped is waiting for the preliminary on the culture to come back today to decide which route to go but I cant stand just waiting, letting it get worse. Any ideas are much appreciated! TIA
So What Happened?™
Well we just heard back from his ped, the preliminary 24 hour culture shows suspicsion of staph/strep :(
They are starting Keflex and said to use Lotrimin to combat any possible yeast that is there or may start as a result of the antibiotic.
A huge thanks to all of you for all of the great advice!! We will be using many of your suggestions just to be sure we cover ALL bases! Thanks again!! **********Just to update since you have all been so great with the wonderful advice! We started the antibiotic Friday night and by Saturday some of the bumps were down, not much improvement the rest of the weekend. Still a few less bumps but the skin is still bright red like a bad sunburn. We have stopped sugar and are using Lotrimin just incase there is some yeast there. Lots of Probiotics and plain yogurt for him. We also have been using children's benedryl at his Dr. recomendation to help make him a little more comfy and it seems to maybe be helping with the inflammatory response.

They say do not use OTC meds intended for adults. And watch him closely for fever, because a yeast infection can become systemic which is extremely dangerous for children.

In addition to my private message of a few minutes ago . . . .
ABSOLUTELY STOP all sweet things in his diet.
As another mom said, no juice, maybe no fruit,
certainly no white pasta or bread.
Please let us know what the doctor says.
Thanks.

Dear mom, try putting plain flour on your child to dry out the bumps, it may be a rash. Does it itch? Have you tried limiting his sugar intake? My baby and I battled thrush for over 7 months and what worked in the end was the probiotics, yogurt and grapefruit seed extract pills from the health store.

Right away, I started to suspect a bacterial infection when it spread that quickly....glad you got a diagnoses and started antibiotics.
I am a big believer in salt baths. Most other countries/cultures use them. Salt and olive oil were used for centuries before soap. Once I started bathing my babies bottoms in salt water, I was amazed at how nice their bums stayed. I still used A&D, but my how nice.
Any kind of salt dissolved in warm water will work. Epsom, sea salts, table salts, kosher salts. Throw in a good handful and let baby sit and soak a few minutes. The water can be in a sink, big bowl, a few inches in a tub.

here is a web site for treating thrush (same candida yeast). We are in the middle of fighting yeast too, though ours is oral/ breast. You may glean some ideas from this web site. Also check out Dr. Sears web site. Nistatin has a very low rate of success (30%). You best bet for today is to try an over the counter anti-fungal cream, like the ones used for athletes foot. that cleared up the candida yeast on my nipples right away. Also look into gentian violet, and grapefruit seed extract, and vinegar washes. You can try things in conjunction, as well one right after the other depending on success. Yeast can be very resistant to treatment. This just came to me and I have not read about it, but i'm wondering since vaginal yeast infections are also from the Candida yeast if Monistat cream wouldnt give him some instant relief. just a thought.
I love dr.s, my husband is a Dr. But that being said, my pediatrition was no help to us getting rid of candida yeast. I eventually got the help I needed from a lactation consultant and a pharmacist friend.

I am really sorry to hear of your son's situation, my daughter frequently gets yeast type diaper rashes (she has very sensitive skin) and I can understand how uncomfortable this must be. We do a combo of cool baking soda baths (very diluted vinegar can also be good-non diluted is VERY painful) to soothe her. A little bit of ibuprofen (for any pain) and over the counter athlete's foot meds (they are antifungal and what our doctor told us to use.) I use the cream every time I change her diaper, although sometimes I put plain organic yogurt on her bum in between too. I also give her the yogurt to eat and keep her away from sugar. Lots of water, avoid fruit juice (especially pear and apple as this can make the urine too acidic and it burns). I wish you both all the best!

My 2 year old girl has battled a few yeast infections. Her doc prescribed an anti-fungal that finally seemed to help - fluconazole (sp?). She took it in a dropper. Has his pediatrician mentioned something like that? My daughter took it for about three weeks straight and it cleared most of it up. That, and walking around w/out a diaper (as you said). She was also on the Nystatin cream, which didn't seem to help a ton - she started out only on that but it didn't do much so then the doc added the fluconazole. The doc also said we could give her crushed up pills of acidophilus, which you can find at CVS or vitamin stores. I forget the exact dosage - we didn't end up doing that though. Good luck, the poor guy!!
EDIT - the cost I had to pay (after insurance) of the anti-fungal was about $50..

Hi! I wanted to let you know that my son went through this same thing about a year ago, same age. It turned out to be a strep infection and it gets worse! He had every symptom/side effect of strep EXCEPT the sore throat. In fact, his hands and feet ended up losing all of the skin. His hands peeled like he was wearing gloves. It was really scary. If they did not get the positive result from a throat culture, have the doctor do a skin swab from the crack of his bottom. I know it sounds weird but that is how his Dr. finally made the diagnosis. You also may want to have him allergy tested. I know a great Doctor in the Glendale area if you need the information. Hope he feels better soon. Feel free to contact me if you would like to talk.
