Severe Diaper Rash Associated with Diarhea (Sp?)
My 26 month old son has now had diarhea for 4 days. I'm sure he got a bug or the Roto Virus from playing at the park or at McDonald's. He's only had diaper rash once and it wasn't that bad when he was around 2 months old. This time, his bottom is so sore that I can't even touch it. I've given him several baths in the Aveeno Oatmeal bath soak, but really doesn't seem to help much. I've been using Desitin, as well as, Vaseline.
He's in so much pain. Please advise as to what really works best and quickly, and also should I use a warm wet washcloth instead of "Sensitive" baby wipes?

So What Happened?™
All I've tried up to now hasn't seemed to do much good, but will try the recent suggestions I've received this evening in my email.. I do so much appreciate all of your help and prompt responses. Lord knows that we all feel our babies pain.

We have been through this alot. Make sure he has lots of fluids like pedialyte and keep him on the BRAT diet. Bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast). Give plain water baths. Mix vasoline and desitin toghter or call you Dr. and get Nystatin cream. It works soooo fast . Way better than the other 2. It cost us only $4!!
My son had Rota Virus for 2 weeks and we ended up in the er. He has also had diarehha that last 2 weeks. This is what all the Doctors have told us. Hope it works!

Hi P.,
My little sweeties were the diaper rash kings! We used a mix of Triple Paste and Mylanta. The Triple Paste is like Desatin but the consistency of paste. It stays on better in between changes. We just poured the Mylanta in their diapers to protect those little bottoms for those few minutes before you realize they had a bm. You have to ask the pharmacist for the triple paste. Hope this helps.

I second the Nystantin. I would call and see if you pediatrician could call you in a prescription for it. Whenever I have had to use it - the rash is normally gone within a few diaper changes.
BTW - we live in the same area.

My Dr. recommends using A&D Ointment.....and a lot of it! He also says not to use baby wipes. The A&D Ointment acts as a coating/barrier for the skin yet it's easy to wipe off - which means you don't have to wipe repeatedly in order to get your baby clean(unlike Desitin which can be difficult to get completely off). I've never used anything other than A&D and my daughter has never gotten a diaper rash.

Hi Pam,
A baking soda wash (one Tablespoon dissolved in a half cup of water) may help also. Pat it on baby's bum with cotton balls after each change. Also try using A&D ointment instead of the vaseline or other creams. Change frequently.

I would seriously think about taking your little one to the doctor. That sounds like a problem that has gotten out of hand for over the counter solutions. Not to mention, that he has had problems with his bowls for 4 days or more?
