My daughter called me this morning and said her babies diaper looked like there had been sand in her stool. She had been at a relatives and had grilled cheese and tomato soup for her meal. She had the diaper in the morning and was HORRIBLY SORE AND RED. She cried and said ouch, ouch while being changed. Anyone think this could be an allergy to food?
She often gets a very sore bottom. She is 21 months old.
Thank you.

My little guy would get terrible diaper rash from eating anything tomato. I would let his bottom dry out then put a very thin layer of aquaphor, then diaper rash cream, then pat in corn starch. I know that sounds like a laborious process but it did help him heal much faster.

Tomato's are very acidic, that is probably the cause of the diaper rash. If possible keep the area clean and dry and exposed to air today. Use unscented wipes or just a soft wash cloth and luke warm water to gently pat the area clean and then pat dry. A good diaper rash cream to keep urine and stool off the rash will help relieve pain.

The best thing I have ever found for diaper rash is a cream called Auquaphor. When my first son was in the hospital he had a rash so bad that he was bleeding from a washrag left in his diaper. It took care of it completely within 12 hours. Use it each time you change and clean her bottom. I get it at Schnucks grocery store or Walgreens. Check around where you shop. The nurses in the nursery were so impressed, they switched to Auquaphor to use in the hospital nursery.

My little guy used to get a very sore bottom after he pooped from tomatoes. Aquaphor (or it's Walgreen's or CVS equivalent) mixed equally with liquid Maalox (or it's equivalent) worked wonders for this rash. It kind of yucky mixing it together but it is definitely worth it. Friends recommended this treatment after the neo-natal nurse their twins had recommended it to them!!
I mixed a small tupperware container 's worth at a time and kept it on hand for these rashes. It was summertime so I kept in in the refridgerator for soothing cool relief.
Also this helps keep the poop from sticking to his bottom, making for easier wiping at the next diaper change.
He wasn't allergic to the tomatoes, just his skin was to the after-poop. Pediatrician said this is a very normal reaction.
Let us know how it works for you.

My kids often got diaper rash from acidic foods like tomatoes, or spicy foods like peppers. It could be an allergy if it happens a lot. The dairy would give her runny stools. My money is on the tomato. Its is probably just too much acid for her system to handle.

Food allergies usually manifest in hives, not diaper rash. She may just have very sensitive skin, and tomatos are acidic. My daughter had very sensitive skin when she was a baby (and still does), so anything that was acidic had to be very watered down, or she would get a horrible rash, sometimes she would even blister up! I would suggest that you have your daughter consult her child's pediatrician for recommendations on what's best to use as a barrier on her child's skin. We ended up using Aquaphor regularly, and when there was the occasion of rash, we used a prescription Questran/Aquaphor mixture that worked wonderfully.

God luck!

Allergies can cause diareah and yes if it is a acid item like Tomatos it can cause some nasty diaper rashes. Sand looking stools also can mean a parasite so if it keep happening you might want to get that checked out.

Best way to see if there is a problem with a food is by keeping a food diary. When something bothers her you can see what she ate and if it happens more then once you can see the common food she had and rule out the ones that she eats and doesn't have problems with other times.

I would think it's the tomato's.

BTW- I am actually surprised that a 21 mo. old ate tomato soup! I mean, I believe you, I'm just shocked! My boys are just such non-soupy kids that it's just surprising to hear about a little baby eating it!

often gets very sore bottom says to me it is the diaper I had that with my youngest three kids. Out of the blue bleeding butts. It's very hard I know. Change diaper brands. I had good luck with Pampers (5 years ago) I know they never stop 'improving them' so its hard to say what would be the brand for me now. I could not use white cloud or store brands. something else to consider. : )

I thought my daughter was the only one that went through this! Any time I would feed her ANY kind of cheese she would have a bad diaper rash. From the age of about 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 I never gave her cheese and would tell people not to give her cheese. She never had a diaper rash again. I started giving her cheese around 2 1/2 and she never had a problem with it again. My Dr. was pretty sure of she would grow out of it, and she was right :)

My oldest daughter (now 28 yrs. old) had terrible problems with a sore bottom. One diaper change and she was fine, the next diaper and she was raw. I never found a correlation with any food, but came to realize it happened when she was cutting a new tooth. I got a prescription salve from the doctor which worked well.
