Sergers. Help with Christmas Gift

Can anyone here educate me about sergers? A family member, an excellent seamstress, included that on her Christmas list. I would love to surprise her with it, but fear that a good one will be way too expensive. Please don't suggest that I go to a fabric store and ask. I don't have that option.

I saw Singer, Brother, and Janome on Amazon. Are any of those good brands?

I'm grateful for any insight you can give me.

What can I do next?

Get her a Brother 1034D or a Janome model. The Singer machines of now are not the same as yesteryear in quality. The price range is around $220 depending on where you get either and shipping.

I have several other sergers besides the Brother 1034D and love it. It is easy to thread and easy to use.

Happy holidays.

I have a middle of the road singer serger. It is OK for basic things. I prefer it to the brother or janome for light projects.

My industrial machine is WONDERFUL! lol But I am sure would be too pricy for an x mas gift.

You might want to 'feel' out your recipient to see what SHE has in mind. Some folks swear by brother and janome...me...not so much!

Merry merry!

My mom has a Brother serger that she really likes. I agree with Feline about investigating what kind of machine she may be partial to. If you don't want to ask her directly, you could check to see what type of sewing machine she has now. She may be partial to that brand. :)

Almost all name brand sergers will be fine. If she's an accomplished seamstress you going to want to get a good quality one.

4 threads best. 3 okay but really need that 4th thread option.

Lower looper, upper looper, left needle, right needle. 4 threads.

Please get her one that has a self threading option. My Juki doesn't have that option and my father in laws baby lock does. I am so envious...lol. He simply ties the new color of thread to the end of the old color then pushes the pedal.

As the knots get to the needle hole he has to stop and cut it so he can use the needle threader then move on. It's the best thing EVER!!!

I love that option. I would not want one that only had 3 threads although I know that some decorative stitches only use 3.

I think you might want to consider a book or two that has cool serger lessons/how to sew cool stuff with your serger.

And if you can afford it get a carrying case for it. If not don't worry. She'll get one sooner or later so she can enroll and take classes at some local quilter store.
