Self-Cleaning Oven?

Ladies,

I am not sure what to do - I have a self cleaning oven in serious need of cleaning before the holidays. However, the odor is so bad while it is cleaning! My daughter and I both have allergies and breathing issues. I have done it with just me in the house, but won't have such an opportunity in the foreseeable future.

It's already cold here, so keeping the windows open isn't a practical option.

Is it safe to let this run while we are out of the house? Or should I bite the bullet and do it and suffer with the side effects?

What can I do next?

Whatever you do, DON'T leave it.

I have GE Profile as do many of my neighbors and we all learned the hard way with our self cleaning ovens. Out of the nearest 8 homes on my street most of us have GE Profile.

EVERY one of us who used the self clean cycle the first time had to call he fire department due to the heat. One house did catch fire. I don't know if it was the oven or the builder did not do something right but we were told then and there by the fire fighters to never use that cycle again.

We complained to GE and they did nothing. I have since ripped everything GE out of my house and replaced it with the higher end Kitchen Aid. STILL.... I will not run a clean cycle on the oven.. that was scary.

I do use the Easy off that is safe for self cleaning ovens, elbow grease and take proactive measures to ensure I don't get a mess.

And yes, the smell was awful.

I never use that setting. I have a new gas oven, and when they came to install it, the workman said he recommends just using Easy Off for self cleaning ovens. He said the smell, fumes and high temperature just aren't worth the risk. It's a bit more work but I'll take that over potential fire hazard.

Can you do it while your daughter is sleeping? That way she'd be out of the area when the odors are the worst. I wouldn't leave the house when the oven is in the self-clean mode. Too much risk.

Is there anyone else that can come for a few hours? Spouse, parent, friend?
You're really not supposed to leave it unattended.
I do hate that smell though!

A self cleaning oven just basically cooks off any burnt food at a very high heat. You use no chemicals or cleaning solutions so I'm not sure what odors you are really smelling. You can go shopping for a while or walk the mall while it's running. Crack the windows a little. Turn the heat down a couple degrees. Turn all the fans on in the house over the stove and in all the bathrooms. Close off all the doors in the house. When you get back, turn the heat back up, light candles and spray for any odor. Turn off the fans when you're ready. I have high allergies and have never had any problems with that.
