Seeking Weight Loss Advice

I would really like to lose about 40 pounds. After having a miscarriage and two babies over the past four years, I've put on these extra pounds, and they're making me miserable. I feel like I'm wearing a fat suit, always hot and uncomfortable, and I find it hard to keep up with my little boys when I'm chasing after them. And clothes look terrible on me. I tried to find a new dress to wear to a family event, and I got so depressed when everything just looked awful. I look about five or six months pregnant-- just huge in the middle. I'm thinking about joining Weight Watchers, because a few of my friends have had great success with that and have kept the weight off. I'm tempted to try the South Beach way of eating, because it's worked so well for my mom and cousin. (My mom lost forty pounds and has kept it off for five years, and she looks amazing. She still eats foods like bread and pasta occasionally, but overall she tries to stick to lean meats, veggies, and low/nonfat dairy.) The main reason I'm leaning toward Weight Watchers is because I'm afraid I'd inevitably want a cookie or cracker here or there. I like the idea of being able to work a food in with points if I'm really craving something. I'm just wondering if anyone can tell me about their weight loss experiences with Weight Watchers, South Beach, or anything else? Also, has anyone tried the weight loss pill Alli? I've heard there are really gross side effects-- is it worth it? Any help or advice you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hi B., my name is M. and I am a sahm with two kids who are 3 1/2 and 5 months old. I can totally relate to how you feel! I have never been a small person by any means but I feel really heavy right now which isn't my heaviest but I guess after two kids you body just changes drasticly. I am about 10 pounds heavier than I was before I got pg with my daughter and I can totally feel it. I actually joined Biggest Loser Club online and it is very helpful because they give you certain exercises to do and meals to follow and you also have supports groups on there as well. I have done weight watchers myself and it does work but you just have to stick with it. I really think anything works as long as you don't go back to your old eating habbits and continue to work out. I have yo-yoed pretty much my entire life and I am really sick of being over weight and I am trying really hard to try to lose it but I just love food. It's been a struggle but I just keep going even if I screw up a day I just try to get back on track. Well, I wish you luck with your weight loss and I hope you find something that works for you.

Sincerely,
M.

Someone suggested Quick Weight Loss companies, and while they work, let me warn you that 1. they are highly expensive because you're paying for an entire year at once, and 2. if you don't stick that year out, or if you cheat even once, you void their guarantee and you lose all that money. Not worth it in my mind.

Walk 30 minutes a day. Cut out the sodas and drink water. Eat lean meats and lots of fruit and veggies; whole grain carbs are better than processed carbs. If you CRAVE something, let yourself have a small portion and get it over with. Find someone to share weight loss with..whether it's a friend, your Sunday School class, or Weight Watchers..as long as you have a community pulling for you (and keeping you accountable) you'll be successful. This will also be good for your kids and your husband; healthier food can only be good, but don't penalize them for wanting the occasional sweet or junk food. (Occasional is not bad for anyone, even you!)

I lost 40 pounds by modifying my diet and exercising. Cut out soda and snacks replace with fruit and water and 30 minutes of exercise in the morning. Cut your portions and don't eat your kids leftovers.. I tried the pills and it's not worth the problems in my opinion. I cheated on occassion but in moderation (think sliver not slice of cake, a few Hershey kisses not a bar) Park farther and go out and play more with your kids! Good luck, you can do it!

I have tried all 3 and I felt that had I had Alli when I was doing weight watchers it would have been more successful. Both the programs you talk about are good but you need tofind one that works with your lifestyle. I have do treatment effects with alli if I stick to low fat diet.

Maybe you should have your doctor check your thyroid. A lot of weight gained around the middle is a possible sign that something could be wrong. There's a few other symptoms too and if you have any of them I would definately go see your dr. They are.. missed periods or early periods, facial hair, headaches, faitigue, muscle cramps, dry skin and hair or acne. There's a few more that goes with the different thyroid issues but you may just want to get it checked. If you do have thyroid issues than loosing weight is a lot harder and for me it helps to know that I'm doing the best I possibly can and it will just take longer to loose.

I have done Weight Watchers and it was really easy and has become a way of life for me. You are really hungry in the first two weeks but the program forces you to take inventory of your eating habbits, water intake and you eat lots of good stuff because it doesn't cost you any points! My advice if I had it to do over would be to go to a nutritionist. Many of my friends who suffer from chronic weight issues have done better getting on the right track with eating in general than doing a 'fad' diet program like WW or Jenny Craig or anything else. The money I invested in WW would have been better spent. I have kept the weight off and it's a great thing to resort back to if I need to drop a few lbs, but I have suffered a miscarriage as well and have some weight gain from it. I am in the process of seeking a nutritionist currently and believe that this will help me and my family find a better way to eat. Get a referral from your family doctor and get healthy, not just lose the weight. Good luck!
