Seeking Tutor/ Help in School

Does anyone know of a good math tutor for 4th graders???

My son is really struggeling in school. He HATES it! He is smart & if he applied & tried he would make good grades & do fine, but he gives up & says he can't do it before he even starts. The second 9 wks of school just started & he is already failing. His behaviour is great & hes very out going & well behaved, but completely zones out in class & has given up on academics. Hes only in fourth grade so we have a long way to go before we're done w/school & i hate that he dislikes it so much. Any suggestions on getting him motivated to do good & pay attention would be great. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Sounds crazy, but have you had his eyes checked? Maybe he is having trouble seeing the board and therefore missing a lot of information in class, making everything more difficult. Sorry I'm an engineer, but don't know anyone in florida that tutors.

Did you talk to the teacher and the councellor at school -- Did it just started in 4th grade then you know he does not enjoy the teacher's class. You also get his eye sight checked. If he is smart and just trying to be lazy in school, a tutoring may be not much of help as he should be willing to learn and the issue probably is that he is not paying attention in the class. Can you talk to the teacher and establish some sort of reward system? If it started in 4th grade, you may want to talk to the teachers in earlier grade as to what they did to maintain his attention. At home, you may want to ask him and go through his school work to find out what he did in the class? Also give him some reward when he has accomplished a goal in academics. My kids get a dessert at dinner if their handwriting is good, and all of them try to get it everyday.

I am certified in Elem edu and taught math for the past 6 year. I have all the 4th grade books here at my house because I taught a 4/5 last year. If after you get the eyes checked you would still be looking for a tutor...you can contact me. I have moved to a middle school this year,(easier with 2 little ones) so I am home after 4. Hope all goes well!

Hi H.,
I know this can be frustrating as my daughter was in 3rd grade when she started to struggle. Sylvan Learning center worked miracles for us. They evaluate your childs needs and work closely with them. It is alittle pricey but deffinately worth it. Good luck!

Does your school offer after school tutoring programs? this would be the best bet. I would consider asking his teacher or another teacher for tutoring sessions. I know for a fact that the district has just placed an after school tutoring sessions in many schools where the teachers can get paid to tutor their kids. You should check it out. I am a teacher but I am more of an elementary tutor. If all else fails, I would suggest Slvan learning centers or something like that. They may be too pricy though!

If you need someone to help your son, please feel free to give me a call. I am a Certified Educational Therapist, so I am qualified to work on anything from academics to memory issues. I am certified to complete any academic evaluations that you may need. For many students that are labeled "lazy" or other, there is a reason. I would be glad to sit down and discuss your child's needs to help him overcome the opposition to school. Please let me know if I can be of any help now or in the future.
