Seeking Therapist for 11 Yr Old Son

Hi,
We just moved to the area and my 11 year old son is having a tough time adjusting. He is not really into sports like most boys in the area and says he feels like a "loser" here. Just wondering if anyone could recommend a counselor to help him with anxiety and negativity.

I have tried putting him in the Y basketball and swimming. He's done a few after school activities. I really think he needs help with confidence and coping skills. He wears his emotions on his sleeve which doesn't help, so I really would like to pursue therapy at this point. (Also my daughter is the total opposite and already has many friends, so I think this makes him feel worse)...I hope I am putting my replies in the right spot!

What can I do next?

Thank you so much for all of your recommendations. I called Elyse Deleski who referred me to Mica Howell who specializes in kids. If anyone has any experience with Mica I would love to hear about it. Again thanks soooo much!-----C.

I don't think the issue warrants therapy just yet. I agree with the other mom. Find some things he is interested in. However if you start to see depression lerking, I know a great therapist in the Frisco area.

Welcome to Frisco, we've been here 11 years. I'm so sorry that your son is having a difficult time adjusting, that is a difficult age to be moving. Honestly, that age is difficult anyway :o I have 3 sons, 12, 15, 18 - so I've been thru it all. I would try to find something he's interested in. Friscofun.org offers tons of classes, its thru the city so they are not terribly expensive. None of my boys play sports, but they are all in boy scouts, and involved in church youth group. Please feel free to email me privately, I work on my computer all day long, so I'm always near my email!!!! ____@____.com of luck to you,
take care,

We have used a counselor in Frisco for my daughter, 5 and son, 10. Both kids loved her and she worked out their issue. There is a male counselor in the same office if he would feel more comfortable with a man. Her name is Erin Holt and here is her web site. http://erinholtlpc.com/ She also has 4 kids of her own. If you are concerned about it and he is willing it can't hurt to have 1 or 2 sessions. If he is not willing you could sit in on a session with her to get some guidance.

The minirith Clinic in Richardson is the best I have found

Hi C.,
Have you tried martial arts? I have all 4 of my children in Taekwondo in Frisco, with Master Greg Tubbs. He is located at the Stars center off of Gaylord and the tollway. He shares a space with Kurt THomas Gymnastics. You should just give it a try, or just come check it out.
Classes are Tuesday and Thursday starting at 4:00 to 5:00 then another class at 5:00 to 6:00. I have 2 girls and 2 boys and they love it!! Master Tubbs is so good with the children and always welcomes more students. I think this would be good for your son. It could be a way of releasing some built up anger and frustration. It's great self defense and it builds self confidence!! This could be the thing your son needs, and it's fun!! Kurt Thomas's son Hunter who is 10 is in the class,
and his little sister who is 9.
Give it a try, I'll be there today at 4.
Good Luck!
J.
