I don't know what's common in America, but I can't find any swimmingschools in my area. I'm living in Manalapan, New Jersey. Can somebody help me with this topic. I want swimminlessons for my son, he's 3,5 years old. Thanks in advance!

Have you tried a local YMCA or JCC? Places like that frequently have toddler or mommy-and-me swim classes at a moderate cost. I looked online and there seems to be a YMCA in Freehold, which is near you. Their website is http://www.ymcanj.org/ and I bet you can find information online or by calling them! There's also a page about their Aquatics and what kind of swimming lessons they offer: http://www.ymcanj.org/Aquatics.html Good luck! :)

Hi-
We are in Long Island and got to Saf-T-Swim. It's a chain so there might be one near you in Jersey. We like them and hopefully will continue with them for a while. Good luck and welcome to America!

Hi S., I can't say that it's common for everyone to enroll their child in swimming, but most of the women I know feel that water safety is extremely important. My son is 4 years old and has been taking swimming lessons for the past 1 1/2 years at out local YMCA. The class sizes are small (6, if you choose a group class)and they have 2 instructors in the water and 1 out of the water at all times. The classes run for 12 weeks. We don't get a certificate at the end of each class though. My son enjoys the pool and the friends he has made. They also offer 1 on 1 classes. It is fairly inexpensive too. You have to join the YMCA for a small fee, but it is good for a year and the entire family is able to use all the facilities. Good luck to you. Hope this helps.

Hi S.,

I hope you are enjoying America! My husband is from the Netherlands so we have a bit in common.

As far as swimming lessons are concerned, try your local YMCA http://www.ymca.net/maps/

Also, if you live near a community pool they may be offered there in the summer. Also some school districts offer lessons if they have a pool. So you may want to contact your own school district to see if they offer lessons.

Good luck! My niece and nephew, who are both in the Netherlands, just completed their swimming requirements. Good luck!

Not sure where you live in Manalapan but I would look into the YMCA in FReehold. The YMCA is called YMCA of WEstern Monmouth County. The YMCA is located off East Freehold Road. You can also try NEw York Sports Club in Marlboro. I know they do swim lessons but not sure what age they start at. Good luck.

Welcome to America.
Here it's not required for children to have a certificate for swimming unless one takes a job of being a lifeguard on a beach or a swimming pool. It's not even required to learn how to swim here....

I tend to think parents should teach their children to swim at a very early age. Although I do not live in N.J., I know you can get your boys swimming lessons at the local YMCA in your area. You should be able to find a phone number for them in your local phone book. Also,
check to see if your area has a local community center where they can advise you on where to go for lessons. In my community here in Up State N.Y...the local Hotels and Motels allow the locals to use their swimming pools for a small charge for the day, where a parent can teach their children how to swim...so call them too..see if any allow locals in to use their pools...if so you'll probably need to bring your own towels.

Hi S.,
If there is a YMCA in your area, they likely offer swimming lessons. Also, many gyms/fitness centers have swim lessons for kids. You might also call any local preschools, who might have recommendations for lessons in your area. Good luck!

See if there are any YMCA's in your area. Most of them have pools and have excellent programs for children. Welcome to America! I hope you enjoy your stay here - no matter how long or short. My maternal grandparents came to America from Holland when they were teenagers. Grandma was from Freisland...and Grandpa from Gronegan. I hope I spelled them somewhat correct. My brother speaks dutch, I however do not or I would have enjoyed responding in your native tongue! Good luck!

Typically, we don't have swimming schools, but rather outdoor swim clubs that are open during the Summer months. They typically open for weekends only from Memorial Day to the end of the school year. Then they open daily until Labor Day weekend. Most swim clubs offer lessons at all levels for all ages.

If you want to swim during the year, your best bet is to find a YMCA or YWCA. Here's a link to the YMCA of Western Monmouth County in Freehold, NJ. I believe that's close to you. http://www.ymcanj.org/ If they don't provide lessons, they should be able to point you in the right direction.

Hi S....have you tried the local YMCA groups in your area? I have used their swim program in the past and it was great...my daughter at the time learned a lot more than what she already knew; now she's an excellent swimmer (she's 15 now). Also, check with the local parks department in your county. Many of those programs have swimming for children and families. Congrats on your new baby!!

S., first, welcome. There are probably a few options for swimming. I enrolled my son in swimming classes at the local YMCA for years. This was not in NJ but I do know that a lot of the YMCA organizations provide swimming lessons and they typically have great instructors. I recently moved to NJ too. My son wanted to take a break from swimming so now he is doing Karate but while checking around for swimming lessons I found out that Bally's has swimming classes and local community centers depending on the resources sometimes provide for swimming classes as well. Good luck!

Welcome to America.

I live in Connecticut, but I hope this advise will help you. You may want to try contacting the YMCA in your area. Many YMCA have swimming lessons throughout the year.

Another place that my help you in the Park and Recreation Dept in Manalapn.

Many places only have swmimming lessons in the summer, so you may just need to wait a few more months.

Good luck.

It is only about 5 miles (10-minute drive) from your town. I would be happy to discuss it further with you and I would very much like you to call me. I notice that you are from the Netherlands. Check with your local YMCA. My older son started a Mommy & Me program at 6 months old, and then started lessons when he started preschool (3 1/2). I still take him once a week. My younger son is just starting his lessons with his preschool class, too (he'll be 4 in April).

Also check with the Red Cross in your area. I know they give lessons around us (Albany NY).

Hoi S.,
Welkom in Amerika. Ik ben lid van een New Resident Club in mijn omgeving en via deze club krijg ik van een hoop andere moeders veel handige tips, o.a. zwemles! Echt ideaal.
