Have you tried Craigslist? www.craigslist.com As a single mother of an 8 years old boy I have found it to be an amazing resource. Of course you always have to be careful with connecting with strangers over the internet but if you do some checking and post an ad you might just get lucky. I remember when we first moved here I found several other Moms, some that owned their house after getting divorced that were looking to rent out half the house.

check with your city on first time home buyer loans, they do offer first time buyers 0 down with no interest rate loans, if your city doesn't have any loans left try other cities, each city has a certain amount of loans they offer, for low income single parents loans, why not buy your won place instead of paying rent, you would be surprised you might be able to buy your own place, plus this would give you more security... homes are cheaper these days, look around ask for help... you never know,
