Seeking Safe Drinking Water to Keep in the Car

Hi Moms,
I am wondering if any of you have found bottled water that is bottled in anything other than plastic. I used to keep bottled water in our trunk for those thirsty emergencies at the park i.e. son spilling what water be bring, car breaking down, etc. I stopped awhile back due to concerns regarding leeching into the water. I thought about putting my own water into glass or stainless steel, but then the water smells musty after just a day to two. So, I am hoping to find water bottled in something safer than plastic. I did find water in glass at Whole Foods, but it was on the expensive side. Has anyone found anything that fits what I am looking for in bottled water?

Another part of the story...a year ago my family went on a 1/2 day trip. It was not in a remote area at all. We brought water with us and our car broke down on a toll road. For such a populated area it was very desolate! It was so desolate that our cell phones would not work! My husband went looking for help. My son and I stayed in the car. I used water poured onto a cloth to keep my son cool as it was a hot day. We had just used all of our water when my husband returned with help. If it had taken him an hour more or longer, my son would have been miserable. That is the type of emergency I am talking about.

If you go to flylady.net (great website for getting organized) she sells all kinds of handy things. I will personally tell you she has a stainless steel water bottle thats leak proof, doesn't sweat, and keeps the water cold even when my car is sitting in the sun all day. I love it! I think it sells for about $15. Well worth it!

Every plastic water bottle has an experation date. The date is not for the water, but for the bottle. It is safe to keep the bottle in the car up until the date on the bottle. (even if you re-fill it).

I don't believe any container is safe to leave in the car. The chemicals from the plastics are released into the water. It is the same with putting plastic containers into the freezer, they don't recommend it. (just in the last 2 years this info has come out)
It's always difficult trying to prepare for those emergencies. My only suggestions is to have enough water for that specific trip. I know that they do make plastic and metal bottles that do not contain that specific chemical. You can get the metal ones in any health food store. As far as the plastic bottles go, I don't know where they are available. Good luck!

NO CONTAINER is safe in the heat or cold of the car for more than a few hours.

We keep 4 stainless steel bottles BY THE DOOR, always. We grab it on our way out.

If you want to remain healthy, you have to be diligent, clean fresh water daily, for every trip.

This was a good question. I always pack fresh water for every trip out. I fill two very large stainless steel bottles (they have a two-pack at Costco for under $20) with ice water and bring along a couple of straw cups that we refill while we're out. So, I never keep a "stash" for regular use.

However, I do keep a bunch of plastic water bottles in the emergency kit in the back. Living in such a hot climate, I've been wondering how much the plastic leaching occurs with them being heated up on a daily basis. Though, in an emergency, any water is going to be better than no water.

There are a few options depending on your willingness to invest in the health of you and your family. Plastic bottles are terrible for the environment, besides the fact that they don't properly get recycled and 30 billion go to landfills each year! It also takes more water to make the bottle than what it actually holds. But bottled water is not all it's cracked up to be either. Most of them use a Reverse/Osmosis filter which kills all good and bad properties of the water making it essentially "dead" water and bringing the pH of the water typically to an acidic level making it hard for your body to absorb and just passes through you. The body is supposed to be slightly alkaline. So ideally you would want to be drinking alkaline water that hydrates you 6x more and filled with antioxidants. There are alkaline ionizers available that can be easly installed in your home which provide safe healthy water and in the long run can save you up to $2500-$5000 a year. Get some reusable bottles stainless steel or glass and fill up with alkaline ionized water fresh before you head for the park! For emergency carry a stainless steel travel Alkapod filter that you can keep in you car all you need to do is add water. I would be more than happy to answer any questions about water! www.ionwayspro.com/h2ogirls or ____@____.com Happy Hydrating!

Change the drinking water kept in the car weekly. Keep bottled water at home that you drink and use it for the car also. Take it back out and use it at home weekly, refreshing the water kept in the car.

How about refilling aluminim water bottles? Or water in pouches-like a juice box?

I heard that the leaching is more of a problem when the plastic bottles are refilled. And there are "safer" plastics. I try not to worry about that-I breathe So Cal air....and use a cell phone. I eat organic to counter act other things. I just can't do it all.

good luck
