Seeking Resources on "Stranger Danger" for Preschoolers

Hi Ladies. I am becoming increasingly worried about "stanger danger". I have explained to my children the dangers out there, however, I think they need a video or book to help illustrate what I'm talking about. Anyone know of any good resources to use, ie, books, video's geared towards preschoolers about this subject?

Thanks for all the great information! It's a great place for me start so I can feel like my children will be safe if I am not around (although at this point me or my husband are always around).

I have found information at Polly Klass (website). At the time, she also offered a safety kit with ideas to keep your child safe.

Currently, we are gently discussing the idea with our son - who loves everyone, so as not to frighten him or giving him nightmares as he is sensitive enough to be effected adversely.
He is coming to realize if I am not comfortable with someone - or if we are not around to 'okay' him, that he should not talk to that person(s).

I got the safe side dvd from the library! My daughter was 2 & we still review their techniques.

There is a DVD called the safe side made by John Walsh & Julie Clark. It is wonderful. It teachers kids how to be safe without scaring them. It goes over when it's OK to talk to someone & when it's not OK. Here is the website.

There is a great one made by Julie Clark the woman who did the Einstein videos. The main character is super chick and my kids will watch it just for fun. You can probably find it on line.

Hi,
I DID NOT like the Berenstain Bears strangers book.

For young kids, I recommend "Once Upon A Dragon: Stranger Safety for Kids (And Dragons)" by Jean E. Pendziwol and the "Kid Guardians - Just Be Safe" series by Scholastic Books. There is one called "Stay Away From Strangers" (the "stranger" in this book is actually a well-dressed blonde woman!) and others such as "I Know Where I Live". The Kid Guardians are kind of corny, but my son absolutely loved this series of books when I bought them when he was 4 years old and he still wants us to read them now that he's 6.

Hi First I would recommend that you get your facts. Most child abductions or custody problems, not real strangers. The Berenstain Bears have a book called Learn About Strangers. I think it helps promote safety and caution while being friendly when parents around. It is important to not invoke unnecessary fear but give real strategies. B. in MI

I haven't gotten to that stage yet so I haven't got a "particular" recommendation... but I know I'd first go to the library and ask them. They have those resources, I would just watch them alone 1st before showing them to your kids since they are usually donated by parents.

The other reason I wanted to respond is because I find it interesting that we have similar stories. My son turned 3 yesterday, my daughter is 18 months and I have a son due March 8th. I've got married July 05! I'm also a sleep deprived SAHM to a my best friend! :)
