I have just started my 4 1/2 month old at daycare and have seen some things that I don't really care for. When I ask what the protocol is they of course give you the patented "correct answer" that you expect. However, what they are doing seems to counter this. It's mostly hygiene things. Plus I feel they just throw him wherever there is space. The place boasts that they do developmental things with the child such as sing to them and play certain games, but I haven't seen them do this with any of the kids. Is this pretty typical with most daycare places? The normal teacher is on vacation until next week so I'm thinking maybe I should wait it out.She is the real reason I chose this place. I really liked her and she made me feel at ease. My first day there I wasn't told anything as far as pass code, where to put his things, the normal routine, etc. I had told the teacher it was our first day and I was a little nervous. I said this with tears in my eyes and she just stared at me and told me nothing. This of course didn't make me feel any better.Three days later they finally asked why I wasn't using the code. I plainly told them because I was never given one. Help!! Plus I'm an overprotective first-time mommy. Does anyone have any good referrals for the carmel, indiana area. My husband and I are moving up there soon from broad ripple. I work near keystone at the crossing mall.
I transferred my son to the precedent Kindercare and LOVE it. It is just night and day difference between this one and my old daycare. My son is doing well and likes it there too. Thanks to everyone who responded to my email. It was greatly appreciated.

I have toured the Kindercare at the Precedent Business park which is right around the corner from where you will be working and was very impressed. I couldn't afford to leave the daycare my son is at now and they didn't have an opening. I also heard from another daycare that this Kindercare is the Country Club of daycare and has a great reputation for long lasating teachers and happy parents. I would look into this for your child!!

S. - Your child has to be your #1 concern. If you don't like the daycare you need to pull him out and look for an alternative. I don't live or work up near you, so don't have any specific recommendations except that you need to KNOW that your son is safe, loved and cared for to YOUR level of expectations. Even if you really like the regular teacher, you know she will not always be there (vacation, sick days, etc). I hope you find a better place for you and your son soon.

I am concerned (based on location and the existence of a pass code) that the daycare you are referring to might be the daycare in which my daughter is currently enrolled. She is two, and we are happy with the center and her teachers. However, I am eight months pregnant and my new baby will start there in January. With respect to your particular situation, when we first started at this center the regular teacher was also on vacation. The room was pretty chaotic and I was not comfortable with the part-time staff who were filling in. I will say, though, that things were much better once the regular teacher came back. Even so, I had her moved to an older room (they were very accomodating about this) and she is really thriving there, and the teachers are fantastic. This is the second daycare I've had her in, and I think that there is always going to be some variation in each room. Also, I've generally found that part-time or floating staff are not as helpful or good with the kids, in part because they are not used to the room, the routine, the parents, the children, etc. I think this is somewhat normal, so you might want to wait it out until the regular teacher comes back. I have seen first hand some daycares. I worked in an early childhood program and had internships at a couple daycares. I would not put my 3 yr old in any daycare center. They do not have one on one attention and are not well cared for I did not think. I would look into a home daycare setting or a nanny.

I have 3 daughters, all of whom I had to start in daycare at about 6 weeks of age. I have been through different corporate daycares as well as in-home babysitters. I always felt the corpororate environment was more enriching. That said, you should feel comfortable with EVERY teacher there and not just the one you prefer, which indicates that their communication among staff is lacking and they have no continuity or unity in their philosophies. I would seriously consider looking at other daycare providers. I have had great (of course not perfect!) experiences with 2 different La Petite locations, Plainfield and Fishers. I have a mother who is a Nanny in Fishers - in her home - and has been doing this for 30+ years now. She was put on this earth to be a mom, grandmother and nanny! :) It's her God-given talent...

My mom usually takes infants and toddlers (my two sons are 3 & 2 and were there for first two years of their lives) ...once they got walking and very active - we transitioned them into a childcare facility to get more social interaction... but at your age/stage - they should just get lots of love and attention - which is what she provides!
