Seeking Referral of Child Counsellor or Psychologist for Grieving in Northern CT

Hi, My 9-year old son lost his Gram three months ago (my Mom). He is really having a very difficult time, yet won't open up to me. I was told by his school social worker that he would benefit from seeing a child counsellor or psychologist to talk to. Does anyone have any experience with this or know of a doctor they would refer me to? Thank you.

What can I do next?

Ct Children's medical center has some great counselors. They are located in Hartford, but may have satellite offices. You may want to check with your insurance company first to see who they have in network, and then have your pediatrician make the referal from there. Your pediatrician may even have be able to make a receommendation.

I'm not sure where you live but when my son needed counseling a couple years ago, we went to Kidz Matter in Enfield, CT. He responded very well to his counselor: she was very down to earth and he relater well to her. He was 9 at the time.

your family care doctor should be able to provider you with a referral as to whats in the area. you could also google it, as to whats available in your area. since you are in northern conn. you could also call the johnson memorial referral line/ they have a lot of programs going on and could get you and your son the counseling you all need

If you're willing to try something a little less formal, there is an organization in Windsor, CT called Mary's Place, which provides help for grieving children and families - from their website: "Mary's Place is a nonprofit Center providing a trusting atmosphere for children and teens who have experienced the death of a parent, sibling or significant person. Through age-related self-help groups, individual consultation and referral, a safe place is provided to grieve and heal." Their website address is http://www.marysplacect.com/.

There is Child and Family services in Springfield or West Springfield and the MSPCC does out reach hovever it will also depend on how far out you are???? The waiting list is a couple of months around here, depending on which agency. You should also ask your doctor if they have any one that they refer people to.
Also the waiting time is different for male and female therapist, it is longer for females that males.
The social worker may have some suggestions also?

Hi K.,
I am a therapist myself, yet work with mostly the adult population. (Lots of grief work, depression, anxiety, adjustment issues). I can give you the names of some child therapists whom I would highly recommend. (Perhaps I'll send a private message to you). Are you anywhere near West Hartford/ Hartford, Connecticut? (My location)
