HELP!!! I have just found out I am pregnant with our second child. I am in the very early stages and need your feedback/recommendations for a GREAT obstetrician/group - I imagine I will have baby at Northwestern downtown. We have Aetna Pos II - I have been online all morning looking at Dr's NAMES - you can't make any informed decisions on written names so PPLEEASE can you other MOMMIES recommend your doctors to give me some idea which direction I should be looking. I will need to get in to a Dr soon. My son was born in NZ, under a specialist group - so it's no problem for me to have to meet with 5-6 different doctors during the pregnancy. He was born 5 weeks early at 3lbs6oz but healthy. I developed high blood pressure in the latter stages of pregnancy and they decided it best for him to be out rather than in!
Word of Mouth is the best advertisement, and I would be grateful to all who share their experience with me.
I look forward to perusing your recommendations - and thanks in advance!!

So What Happened?

Thanks Mommies for taking the time to recommend your doctors practices. I am slowly making my way through your responses - thank you for listing the websites - it has speeded up the process somewhat, and I have checked out the Northwestern Memorial Hospital website to get further information on the M.D's too. I am sure many other expecting Moms will be looking through your responses to get recommendations too. Isn't the internet such a great source of information and form of communication these days - not to mention google and of course Mamasource!! I'm sure over the next 35+weeks and beyond I'll be asking a few more questions - luckily you are meant to forget some things while you are pregnant - otherwise all kids would be an only child :)

Congrats...I know you've gotten quite a bit of responses but thought I also vote for Chicago's Women's Health Group ###-###-####. I've just about seen every doctor there and they are all super nice and gentle. I have a 7 year old girl(delivered by them) and a 3 year old boy(also delivered by them) - both c-sections and I can tell you that I was treated like royalty...telling my doctor I was horrified about the experience (not about being pregnant but giving birth) everyone helped me thru the entire process and really understoon how I felt. Good Luck !!

I second the recommendation for Dr. Marc Kleinberg at the Association for Women's Health on Michigan Ave. He is wonderful. He just delivered my second. My sister sees him as well. His associates are very professional and kind as well.

Caroline, I go to Catherine Clinton at Chicago Women's Health Group ###-###-####. They are downtown and just moved their offices to 211 E. Chicago Ave. They used to be in the Prentice Building at Northwestern but moved when they opened the new Prentice Women's Hospital across the street. I really like Dr. Clinton and all of the doctors in her practice (there are 5 or 6). I had a C section at Northwestern last August and had a really great experience with both the doctors and the hospital.

I would also recommend Nye Partners. They are on Michigan Ave, just above the Coach store. All of the OBs and the nurses are excellent. I recently gave birth to a preemie at Northwestern (born at 25 wks gestation) and I don't think we would have gotten through the anxiety of it all without the support of the whole practice. I was actually sent to the hospital by ambulance from the doctors' office. Both of my children were delivered by Dr. Nye. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Good luck and congrats!

She is the best doctor I've ever been to. She delivered my two boys. My sister-in-law recommended her to me since she is a nurse at NW and did her research for her three children's deliveries. All the doctor's in the group (I think there are 4) are AMAZING. Plus you'll get to deliver at the new hospital which is like a hotel :) Good luck!

Hi Caroline,

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my OB group at Northwestern (delivered my daughter last year). There are 8-10 female doctors and the group is called The Women's Group of Northwestern. They just moved into a beautiful new space located at 737 N Michigan Ave, Suite 600. The women are all fabulous, but I love Dr. Julie Levitt and nurse Mary Daley. The number is ###-###-####.

I can't say enough great things about my OB, Stan Friedell, who is in the same practice with Abbie Roth. They are both fabulous doctors, and you'll avoid the "doctor of the day" call schedule that other practices in Chicago use. They deliver their own patients all but three weekends a month. Dr. Friedell is a great combination of calm when he can be and dead serious when he needs to be. Lots of luck.

Hi Caroline,

I love my OB/GYN! His name is Dr. Gregory Chen and he is a part of the group Progressive Care for Women, located at 676 N. St. Claire. There are 4 doctors at the practice, the 3 others are women and all wonderful as well. As part of your prenatal care, you rotate so that you get to know all of the doctors in the event there is an after-hours emergency - this way, you'll be familiar with whichever doctor is on call.

My first child was delivered by Dr. Chen in 2006 and I am currently seeing him for prenatal care with my 2nd child. He was ranked as one of the top OB/GYNs in the country and is also a professor at Northwestern Medical School. Not only is my doctor great, but the office runs like clockwork. I have never had to wait more than 15 minutes for my appointment. Most of the time, they're calling my name before I've even finished peeing in the cup! Also, they have an in-house lab, so if you get your blood tests before 9:30 you'll get your results the same day. They also have an in-house ultrasound tech. They can take care of all your needs easily without sending you outside.

The group is affiliated with Northwestern and does take Aetna (this is the same insurance that we have). I would highly suggest checking them out! I know they have a website - google them and it should come up.

Hope this helps! Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions. And congrats on the baby news!

I HIGHLY recommend Lakeshore Ob/Gyn. It is a GREAT practice! I had to switch practices due to an insurance change at the same time I found out I was pregnant. I chose Lakeshore Ob/Gyn & I am so grateful that I did! I see Dr. Barton, but I've met with the entire practice. Dr. Gupta & Dr. Garb delivered our daughter & they were wonderful during the entire birthing experience. Along with Dr. Barton each visited us during our hospital stay as well. I HIGHLY recommend this practice! Dr. Barton told me that they will likely keep the practice to 6 doctors which is an advantage over some of the larger practices (you never know who you'll end up with during labor). Also, their office recently expanded & they have an onsite ultrasound tech & lab. I don't believe Dr. Barton is accepting new patients, but Drs. Shaw, Gupta, & Garb are all just as knowledgeable, friendly & personable! Here's a link to their website: http://lakeshoreobgyn-chicago.net/
You seriously can't go wrong with this practice!!!

I use Dr. Michael Halpern at Northwestern Memorial Hospital - ###-###-####. He is in the medical offices that are connected to the hospital, which is very convenient. We had problems getting pregnant, maintaining a pregancy, etc., before we saw him. I was also advanced maternal age. He was able to help us get pregnant and keep the pregnancy. That baby turned 2 in June. Her little brother came a year later and is now 6 months. Dr. Halpern delivered him via C-section on his day off. We love Dr. Halpern!!

I have the same insurance as you and delivered my daughter last January with Nye Partners in Women's Health. They're fantastic - Elizabeth Nye, 2 others doctors & 2 NPs in her office.

I've also heard great things about Dr Timothy Garvey, but haven't personally met him.

Good luck!

Hi Caroline,

Dr. Nye Partners on Michigan Ave are great! Dr. Ray is my doctor, but during the pregnancy, they made me see all of the doctors so that I would know them all in case Dr. Ray wasn't on duty when I went into labor. (She wasn't, and I was glad that I had met Dr. Hollings, who did deliver my son). You can find info at nypartners.com

The only thing that bugged me a bit is that they are very cautious. I was 36 when I delivered and they kept wanting to run tests, have me do the screening for downs sydrome, etc, even when I had already declined certain procedures. Again, not a bad thing at all, just know that they will be cautious.

The Women's Group of Northwestern is the way to go. When I first moved here, I asked three different knowledgeable women (who didn't know each other) who they went to, and they all said the same doctor. All the doctors are nice and compassionate and super-experienced/knowledgeable. They're in the Neiman Marcus building downtown. One of your other commentors listed their website. Good luck!

I'm sure you've already received a lot of other replies, but I LOVE my OBGYN and the practice. They are Lakeshore OB and are at 680 N Lakeshore Dr on the 8th floor. I see Dr. Micah Garb (a man) but if you prefer women, I would suggest Dr. Purel Gupta at the practice. Dr. Garb has seen me through annual visits, a pregnancy, and a LEEP; he's been great! Dr. Gupta was on call when I had my son and she delivered him at NWMH and was awesome even when I had minor complications. The whole staff is great and I refer all of my friends and anyone else I can. ###-###-#### Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Hi Caroline!

Congrats! It looks like you have received a lot of responses, but I wanted to share my thoughts as well. I also went to Dr. Stan Friedell (who was already recommended to you) when I was pregnant with my first child. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. He is fairly "all business" when attending regular appointments with him, but he could not have been better while I was in labor. I also had high blood pressure issues, and he was extremely diligent in monitoring everything. Even though he was not on call, he stayed late at the hospital with me and came in at 6 AM the next morning for the delivery. All his partners are wonderful as well, and I hope I can go to the practice in the future! Good luck with everything and please feel free to contact me if you need help with any other information! By the way, Dr. Friedell's office is located at 680 North Lakeshore Drive (Suite 1200, I think) and the phone number is ###-###-####.

I also, like another poster, really like Dr. Van Arsdale (and his partner Dr. Gayle). I think the group is called Superior Ob/Gyn. They're about to move to 676 N. St. Clair from their current office down the street. I'm seeing him now for my second pregnancy (he delivered the first as well).
Good Luck!
