I am looking to switch doctors and am in need of some recommendations. Interested in an OB GYN who is a great listener and very patient. A doctor who is a good hand holder. Prefer to have my baby delivered by the doctor that I build a relationship with and am looking for a practice affiliated with Highland Park Hospital, Evanston Hospital, Glenbrook...

What can I do next?

Congratulations on finding an OB that you like! I didn't think that an OB exists that is a hand-holder. That usually sounds more like a midwife. I usually recommend the midwifery group at Illinois Masonic...

http://www.acnm.org/commendation_for_Illinois_masonic.cfm

If anyone else here is interested, if you scroll down this page, you will see a list of many of the hospital-based certified nurse midwives in Illinois...

If you're not comfortable with using a midwife, then I highly recommend that you employ a doula. While an OB is usually most unlikely to do any hand-holding (they usually only show up at the last minute for the birth), a doula most definitely will do a LOT of hand-holding--and decrease your risk of having an unnecessary C-section in the bargain!

http://www.dona.org/mothers/why_use_a_doula.php

But it sounds as though you may have gotten the one-in-a-million OB, if she even calls you at home to see how you're doing!

Best wishes,
J.

Dr. Susan Kramer is located at the corner of Waukegan and Lake Cook next to Panera. All the Dr.'s in her group are GREAT. It's Deefield not Northbrook, but very close to you! I had a great experience with both my deliveries at HP and found her helpful AFTER I had the babies as well. ###-###-####. (and of course once you have the baby- the Peds practice in that office is wonderful too)

You might want to look into a CNM (certified nurse midwife)... they can do pretty much everything an OB/GYN can do except a c-section, and they're much more likely to be with you for your entire active labor and pushing. Most women don't realize that your labor and pushing experience are actually the norm with OB/GYNs. It's frustrating that you do all this work to interview and find the prefect doc, build a relationship with him or her, and then when it comes time to actually have your baby it ends up being a nurse (or several nurses) whom you've never met who do most of the work with you. Good luck!

I hightly recommend Dr. Arnold Wagner out of Evanston & Buffalo Grove. He is well worth the visit to Evanston to be seen. He is kind, understanding, takes the time to talk to his patients and you can ask him anything.

He always tells you what he is about to do, makes you feel comfortable and is very smart. He delivered by Baby, 17 years ago and I still see him.

I can't say enough about him and his group. I am in healthcare and am proud to say that I am a snob when it somes to good patient care. I want the best and I deserve it. He gave me the greatest experience, even when I had some challenges.

I hope this works out for you! Best Wishes, S. H

I love my OB Gyn - Dr. Ronald Miller and he is affiliated with all of those hospitals and has two office locations, one near Glenbrook Hospital and one near Evanston. I delivered two babies with him and he was wonderful - he always put my worries at ease. He is in his 50's, so lots of experience in the world of deliveries and I believe he has 5 children of his own. Good luck!

I have used Northshore Women's Health for all three pregnancies. Dr. Dori Becker was my primary but there were 3 other doctors that I got to see and get to know. Their office is connected to Highland Park Hospital and they have a second location in Long Grove. They accept Aetna PPO but I am not sure of what other insurance they accept. I like Dr. Becker because she seems so down to earth and talks to me more like a girlfriend than with all the med-speak. PS Highland Park hospital was a great place to deliver and the staff was really great. Just something to plant in your head. When you know you are going in to deliver, ask for a room in the newer part of the OB wing. They are much more roomy. I was able to get a nice big room for 2 of my 3. With the third I was lucky that I even made it into a room and didn't deliver him on Lake Cook Road!!Good Luck, happy thoughts, happy times!

I have been with Northshore Women's Health out of Highland Park for about 16 years and delivered 3 kids at Highland Park Hospital. My primary is Dr. Dori Becker and I love her. She is kind and friendly and always listened to my "birthing plan". There are a few other doctors in the office but they have you rotate doctors for about the last two months so that you get familair with each one just in case your primary is not available the day you deliver. Can't say a bad thing about any of the docs. They also have an office in Long Grove. I love going to the Long Grove office becuse there has NEVER been a wait. Visits goes so quickly. Good Luck!

I second the recommendation of Debi Lesnick. I also switched to her because I was dissatisfied with my OBs bedside manner. I was a first time pregnancy and had a lot of questions; Debi and Gaye exceeded my wildest expectations when it came to patiently and thoughtfully answering my questions. They were experienced and competent, respectful of my delivery preferences, and have a great relationship with Evanston Hospital. They are Certified Nurse Midwives, so Blue Cross covered their services just like an OBs. Their Evanston office is cramped, worn, and busy, but they also see moms-to-be in a shiny new office in the northwest suburbs.

I'll also drop this bug in your ear: I Hired a birth doula and it worked out very well for us. It helped put my mind at ease during labor to have an experienced cheerleader around. It allowed me to focus on labor rather than fretting.

Congratulations and good luck! There are so many fantastic options for you and your partner and your baby in this area. I'm excited for you to get to go through all this here and now.

Best,
D.

I strongly recommend my midwife, Debi Lesnick. She and another awesome midwife, Gaye Koconis helped me in my delivery. I switched to their practice after dissatisfaction with an OB/Gyn-only practice. These two work with 4 OB/Gyns who have also helped friends of mine.
They deliver at Evanston (now Northshore) Hospital.

all the best to you! No greater listeners than midwives, and these two are backed by some good OBs.

Hi J.,

Congratulations on your pregnancy!
I am pregnant with my third child. Unfortunately, My OB GYN of eight years recently discontinued delivering babies. Therefore, she referred me to one of her colleagues. Her name is Dr. Gail Goldberg. I've been going to her since late June and so far so good. Her bedside manner is very similar to my previous doctor. As you mentioned, she is calm, soft spoken, and a good listener. She shares the office with other doctors, but I only see her. All of the doctors care for their own patients. They just share the space, not the patients.
She's afffiliated with Evanston Hospital. Her Glenview office is located at 2550 Compass Road, Unit J

J., if you are interested in a midwife, Kathy Puls works out of Evanston Hospital. I know several people who have worked with her and love her. She is especially known for patience. She doesn't work in a group, so you get her when you birth.
