Seeking More Info on Toddler Diahrea
Just wondering if anyone else has experianced this-my daughter is 18 months and experiancing watery stools anywhere from 5-10 times a day. I just had a bunch of lab work done on her, but it isn't back yet. I have tried the BRAT diet, changed juices, etc....nothing seems to be working. She does drink more than the reccomended amount of juice per day, but that is because as part of the process I had to take all dairy away. Just wondering if anyone else has experianced this or has any other suggestions, her ped office does not seem very concerned even though this has been going on for 2 months. Thanks.

Hi A.,
I can't guarantee this is the solution, but my daughter had loose stools all the time too too. It was the juice...all juice did it to her...apple, grape, orange...didn't matter, they all caused it.
My ped told me to not bother giving her juice at any time. All kids need is water and milk if they are eating fruits. I stopped the juice and her stools firmed up within a couple days.
Good luck!!!

Another one who agrees that juice may be causing the watery stools. And I also agree that anytime she is sick you can definately do the pedialite. I used to have a recipe for a home made solution of pedialite.....but I'm not sure if I have it anymore. You may be able to look online. If I find it I will email you. I used this and then just added a little bit of sugar just to add some sweetness to it. Not too much. My daughter is 3 1/2 and we have diluted her juices since she started to drink them. She doesn't know the difference. 1/2 water 1/2 juice. Are you giving her a certain kind? Maybe she's allergic or it just doesn't sit well w/ her stomach. I think it's worth a shot to try and cut back on her juices.

As long as you're having blood work done, I would check for celiac disease. It's an intolerance to gluten-rye, wheat, barley, and oats. It's a blood test, you can get it done at your ped. office.
If you would like more info, please let me know. This disease runs in my family--the main symptom is diarrhea. I'm sure it's probably not it, but you might want to do it just to be safe.
Best of luck--

I had his issue with my son and we found he has Froctose Malabsorption, and can have no fruit or sugary substances. I might get her tested for this as well.

Have you tried switching to Propel water instead of juice. Niether of my kids will touch Pedialite(sp?) and I am not big on juice because of the suger so this was a great alternative. It is basically fortified flavored water. The Berry flavor is my son's favorite. If he see's a bottle in the store he will screem for it. He is also 18 months old. After 48 hours without dairy and on the propel, my son was back to normal. Good luck.

You could always give your daughter soy milk. It has a lot more vitamins and a lot less sugar than juice. Also, try adding bananas to her diet to solidify her stool. Lastly, if your daughter is lactose intolerant and not allergic to dairy, try Lactaid Milk. Lactaid milk gives all of the vitamins, minerals, etc., but none of the milk sugar that people can not digest. Also, cow's milk helps with the consistency of the stool.
Good luck,

Hi A.,
I had a simular situation with my daughter, and I did not giver her as much fruit, and switched her from apple juice to grape. Still dilited with water. My Pediatrician suggested yogurt when any child get diarrea. Its stops it up, literally.
Good luck!
