Hi. I'd just like to read about people's labor experiences at Tri-City Hospital. I've heard some good and bad from a few people, but I'd love to see how others have faired. Also, if you're comfortable with sharing, could you please let me know if you had any meds or a C-section. I'd like to know how much they try to push medications on moms. Were you able to walk around before intense labor? If you had a birth plan, did they try to follow it? Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone who responded! It looks like we have decided to deliver at Tri-City. When we did the hospital tour, the nurse was really great and the place seemed nice. Plus, she reassured us that if we have a good birth plan and are firm with our request of having a non-medicated birth, then it should not be a problem. Now, I just have to write a firm but nice birth plan. Thanks again for all the responses!

I had my son there in December. It was my first baby and ended up having to have a c-section because of very low amniotic fluid 1 week after my due date. I loved my anesthesiologist!! Don't remember her name though. I had a good experience, but have a friend that didn't have a very good one. The L&D rooms were full when she got there and ended up going to Scripps in Encinitas. Pretty surprising since they have so many rooms. I think all hospitals have the potential to be either great or horrible to different people. Most hate Navy hospital but they have taken the best care of my dad through several heart bypass surgeries. They did ask for a birth plan.... but that wasn't really needed with a c-section and a baby in the NICU for 3 days!!!

Good Luck!!

Hi W.,

I delivered at Tri-City Hosp. last year in Oct. I have to say overall it was pleasant exp. I did have a few overbearing nurses that seem to care less about your emotional well-being. They were in there to get their job done, then get out. I delivered in one of their suites which great! The down-side to that was I was transferred to a shared postpartum room an hr after my deliver and had a room-mate that did not speak English, who had visitors around the clock. So much for a peaceful recovery. The nurses also seem to take their time to come and help you once you are postpartum, your pretty much on your own. Food was pretty good. My Dr. was there exactly when I needed her and I delivered a very healthy 8.5lb baby boy. To me that was what counted most. Tri-City rating 3 and a half stars.
Good luck to you,
J. S.

I delivered my son just over a year ago at Tri City and I had a great experience even though a very long labor. The nurses and support were fantastic and the labor room was very private. Our little guy was in NICU for a little while with jaundice and I can't praise the support there highly enough too. Just make sure they don't send you home too soon (they were very busy that day) as I believe that was our mistake with the jaundice situation and we were back a few days later. Congratulations on your future little one!

Hi! I had my first baby at Tri City. I think they have a wonderful womens center there. I have no complaints. My daughter was born 2 months early. My amniotic fluid sac had a tear so i was on bedrest for a week in the hospital before i actually deliverd. They took care of me, were amazing with my daughter who was in neonatal for only a week! I was able to bring her home-she is now 10! Ahh how time flies. It is the people that make the place-not the "building". I was fortunate to have some great nurses. I admit there was one i did not like (and i let it be known to another nurse) and so she did not play a major role in my delivery.
I know Tri City is not picked because everyone loves Scripps-but honestly-i have no complaints!
Congrats!!!

I did not deliver at Tri-City, but I wanted to respond because I noticed that you are contemplating a homebirth. I was going to have my first baby at Tri-City, but after we had our tour of the maternity wing I could not bear the idea of having my baby there. I had heard they were not the best, but not the worst, about natural births (which was definitely what I wanted - for the baby's sake) and I did not know anyone who had a bad experience there. My own reasons for not wanting to deliver there are not so important, but I just wanted to tell you that I chose homebirth and I think it was the best decision! It was a normal and uneventful birth (very painful, but that's normal!) and it was just so wonderful to be at home with only the people there that I wanted there.

From what I learned in my childbirth classes and from what I experienced, the most important ingredient for you to be able to have a natural birth is to be in an environment where you can relax. Only you can decide where that will be. For me, I was a little nervous about having my first baby at home, but it was preferrable to me than Tri-City. I was very comfortable and had complete confidence in my midwife, but not so much with my OB who would have delivered at the hospital. Afterward, I was SOOOOO glad I had given birth at home, and for my second baby, the choice was simple, it was only homebirth for me.

I wish you the best in your pregnancy, birth, and beyond. This is just the beginning of tough decisions! :)

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me! I was excited just to read that you are contemplating homebirth, even if you do choose the hospital, and I hope you have a great experience. :)

I had a wonderful ____@____.com baby was born March '08 & was 2 weeks late!!! They had to schedule an inducing day, but that didn't work either because I only dilated to 1 cm after 24 hrs so I ended having a C-section. I stayed 5 nights there & really enjoyed my nursing staff. They were so attentive & very compassionate.
