Wow! Don't even know where to begin- she had a high fever of 101-103 for 5 days now. Not even sure what it could be. She's complaining a lot of her eyes (light is too bright- or she can't close them because they burn) She's very fussy- and has a lot of leg pains. She told me she thinks it's because when she went to the central park zoo- she went tothe petting zoo and then forgot to wash her hands and after that went to Mc Donalds.
I'm very nervous right now- My husband is at the hospital with her now they just drew blood and awaiting results
Anyone out there can give me some advice?

They were glad that she wasn't in pain- but lordi lou the bad breath is horrid!!!! They told me she has the flu on top of it!!! so my poor baby!!! I thank all of you for the advice and support- I will follow up with all of you after the dr.s appt on the 14th

Ask the doctor to check her for "Kawasaki Disease". It is treatable but very rare. Here are the "text book" symptoms: red eyes (not streaks just solid red)
red palms and feet bottoms (looks like a rash) it may it or peel
fever for 5 days or more
may have been diagnosed with "cocksackie virus" (it looks similar the first few days)
Swollen throat and mouth
pain in joints and limbs
There are a few more but ask your doctor. It is a simple blood test but it can be a serious illness. Please don't delay. Sorry if I scare you but it needs to be treated right away if hat is it. God Bless! Ali

Its never easy when your child is sick,I get nervous too but theres not much you can do right now but wait and see what the doctors say. I'm sure she's fine. Theres definitley illness going around right now. My whole house has been sick - including my DH who has been complaining of a lot of muscle/leg pain. No fever but the doctor said its probably viral b/c all his bloodwork came back good except a low white blood cell count - indicating virus. Try not to worry to much right now - at least she is with the doctors now and can be treated.

I went through this recently with my boyfriend - it turns out he had lyme disease. Please make sure tha they test her for lyme, especially since you said she was outdoors, near animals - perfect place for ticks. Good luck.

Hi J.,

First, I want to say that for a child 101-103 is not considered a high fever. I just had this virus going through my preschool last week. No other symptoms just a fever for almost a week on and off. It is probably just a virus, however in the future I don't think you should wait so long to see the doctor. As far as not washing her hands and eating we all know that is not good practice. Any time I take my classes on a field trip I carry antibacterial wipes in case we do not have access to soap and water. It's not the same but it's better then nothing. Keep us posted let us know how she is.

Hey J., do you believe in the power of prayer. Well if you do call on the name of Jesus. Thats what I do in the time of stress or fear. May God touch your child right now.

First of all don't feel bad for waiting 5 days to seek medical help. My kids were always running fevers and a call to the doctor always brought the same answer: tylenol, fluids, and rest. Call if there are other symptoms that develop.

I'm sure the doctors will figure out what's up. The symptoms sound like cocksackie which is viral but since I'm not in the medical profession I wouldn't begin to diagnosis your precious daughter.

Hugs to you and your family as you wait for the results and wishing your daughter a fast recovery.

The leg pain and eye complaints may be flu like symptoms because of the fever and being dehydrated (from sweating). Dry eyes make them sensitive. She will probably get IV fluids, tylenol and labs at the ER. The tests will help to determine what king of infection she has. If it was foodborne she would have other symptoms i.e. diarrhea or vomiting. Though humans can get diseases from animals it is unlikely. More likely she has the flu or a UTI. A fever helps to fight infection and analgesics are used more to keep it from going to high and resolve the symptoms that accompany fevers.

Hi J.,
Not sure why you waited 5 days of your child being sick to contact a doctor, especially if you thought she had a high fever, but right now, all you can do is wait for results of testing to find out a diagnosis. Just so you realize, 101-103 is not a high fever, it's just a fever. This is not dangerously high, unless it's a newborn under 2 months - and if your daughter is talking, I know she is not an infant. I really don't know what advice I can give - the medical staff will handle diagnosis and treatment, and you'll know what the cause of her illness is. The only advice I can give is if that next time your child is running a fever, if it doesn't let up in 24 hours, contact your doctor. If she has any type of infection, you would have the option of treating with antibiotics rather than letting it worsen for days.
Good luck, I hope that she will be on the mend soon!

I hate to sound judgmental, but why would you wait 5 days before taking her to a doctor? I could be e-coli or something else serious and the longer you wait the harder it is to cure.I hope its just the flu, but next time please dont wait so long.

Don't feel bad about the delay. Sometimes we as parents feel like we can take care of something on our own. If I were you I would wait to see what the doctors say, and stay by her side, cooling her body with towels and cold water, with a focus on her head. I have also been told that onions in a sock will drain the sickness/fever from a child. It worked for me personally, but it sounds like she has a virus, or something she got from one of the animals/reptiles at the petting zoo. Pray on it and wait to hear what the doctor says.

J., I will pray for your daughter and I will pray for you and your husband to have peace until results show up. Whatever it is, please do not blame yourself or anything of that sort. Don't question yourself what if or if I did this or that or maybe I should have, don't because you're beating yourself over it and it doesn't do anything good. Right now, just wait for the results but make sure they tell you what to look for and what you can do in the meantime. Check head and body everywhere for ticks and marks that look like a tick bite or land other viruses, ask the dr what you should be doing and looking for and you want to google them to keep in mind what to look for and I will pray for all of you. PLEASE let us know....thanks.

Hi J., You did not mention your daughters age. I think taking her to the doctor is in order. They can test her and set your mind at ease. Hopefully whatever it is is on its way out. My best, Grandma Mary
