I am approximatly 18 weeks pregnant and have had pains in my lower abdomen area (mainly when I cough or go from sitting to standing posistion) on and off. I have also had blood in my stool ONLY when I go #2 at night. My question is simple-what is wrong? I have tried calling my OBGYN and have left 4 messeges from 0800 until 1506, no one has returned my call. PLEASE someone let me know what's going on!

What can I do next?

It's probably round ligament pain. Although it's uncomfortable, it's nothing to worry about. Actually it's a good sign that the uterus is growing the way it should.

When you get a round ligament pain, try applying pressure to the spot that hurts and take a couple of slow, deep breaths. It should subside in a minute or two. To avoid getting them in the future, try to avoid sudden, jerky movements.

Of course, if the pain doesn't resolve in a few minutes, or if it's accompanied by other symptoms, it's worth a call to your caregiver to check it out.

As far as the blood in your stools it could be internal hemorrhoids which is very common in pregnancy. Of course you should consult your OBGYN, but it's nothing to be alarmed about. I know that with my 4th pregnancy I experienced a lot of symptoms that I never had with my other children. Good luck, and Congratulations!

I'm really surprised that you haven't had these issues before. I have the pain in the stomach when standing or sneezing/coughing...it's just round ligament pain, and is normal...had it with dd too. The blood on the other I would suspect is from hemroids...If it's bright red and only when you wipe...that would be my guess (buy a bottle of witchhazel and some cottone rounds, soak one in the witchhazel and put it on your bottom, let it stay for 15-30 minutes every night and it should resolve itself after a few nights) you'll need more fiber and/or a stool softener, if it's darker I'd just show up at my OBs office and refuse to leave until you are seen.

Congrats on your growing family! Your problems could be due to a number of things. Some of which are very concerning some of which are not. In any case, just to be on the safe side I would make a trip to the emergency room. The lower ab pain could be due to your round ligament stretching, but considering this is your fifth child it seems like this is something you would recognize. Also are your bowel movements painful when they come out? Do you feel as if it could be a hemroid or constipation? Have you had more frequent bowel movements? Are they loose or very solid? How is your appetite? These are all questions that are important in determining whether what's going with you is just some normal side effects of pregnancy or something more severe.
Keep calling your doctor until you get some answers or just head to the hospital. When it comes to your health and the health of your unborn child you can never be too careful.

Also I have IBD (Crohn's disease) and those are some of my symptoms. If you google IBD there are a whole slew of very informative websites that could help you determine if you have any of the other symptoms of Crohn's or Ulcerative Colitis. I really like www.crohnsonline.com and www.crohnsandme.com both are very informative and have videos to explain symptoms. I hope this helps some. Take care and let us know how things turn out....

Hi B.,

I have had and still have the pain with moving from sitting to standing. Once I was at a metting and stood up...my friends thought I was going to pass out (was pregnant). The doctor sent me for a detailed ultrasound (not pregnant) which showed no problems. He thinks it is my uterus tipping when I stand up. I don't know but I carried four babies. Make sure you discuss it with your doctor but worrying won't help.

The blood in your bowels is probably from constipation and/or hemorrhoids. Drink LOTS of water and walk daily. If it keeps up drink more water. Be sure to tell your doctor and if it is not bright red and is brownish or black, go to the doctor now.

Good luck to you. I hope your pain goes away after your pregnancy.

I would make a trip to the minor emergency center, or just make an appointment with your OB and request to be seen as soon as possible. They should be calling you back with an answer !!! Good Luck !

I had this occur a few times with my second child. I ended up going to the hospital, but it turned out to be dehydration which in turn caused constipation. The OB's advice...which seems to be what everyone says...drink LOTS of water. Good luck!

DOn't worry! It's probably two things:

lower abdomen pains: probably just things stretching out and being stressed in new ways. It's called round ligament pain. But get it checked, certainly. But because you say it's when you cough or change positions, I"m almost 100% positive that's what it is.

Blood in stool: ha ha! Congratulations! You're constipated. Drink more water, every day, at least 10 8-ounce glasses per day. Space them out nicely, though. Also, increase your fruits and vegetables, and keep your meat intake to a minimum. Keep your carbs complicated :) Not simple.

Congratulations! And consider switching to a midwife. Their quality of care tends to be higher. They'll call you back quickly, and your appointment length will be an hour or more, it's really great. THey will answer every question, and give you the time you deserve.

By your description of the times you called, it sound like your military. If you are, then good luck getting them to call you back! I've been VERY unsuccessful with any army hospital having great OB care. I agree with the other moms advice. Drink more water, and consider getting a maternity support belt. My Drs have a midwife surprisingly with them, and she suggested that I buy one for the same pain. Especially since the more kids you have the sooner everything seems to relax she said. If you had the time, I would just show up right when I office open and ask to speak to the advice or head nurse if you were really concerned. Or you could just make sure you bring it up at your next appointment. Good luck and congratulations!

I had some pains like that during my second pregnancy but never had the blood in my stool so I'm not sure. My doctor told me it was just my ligaments pulling because of everything moving around in there to make room for baby.

More importantly I would have to say you may want to look into other doctors. You really shouldn't have that much trouble hearing back from them when you call for any reason much less when you're having blood in your stool and you're trying to find out whats wrong.

You def. should talk to your doctor about this but to ease your mind a little. Pain in the lower abdomin is perfectly normal. and the blood in your stool is most likley hemorroids. I get that with all of my pregnancies. In fact it is usually how I know I am pregnant. Try taking a stool softner and having some suppositories on hand in case it gets hard to go #2. I use to freak out over my abdomin hurting but your body is having to make room for a baby and your uterus is stretching. Good luck.

All of these seem to be the same answer, and I pretty much agree. The ligament pain tends to get worse with each child -- by your fifth, it can be pretty severe, but nothing to worry about. By my fourth child, I would have to wait a few seconds to walk every time I stood up.

SWITCH OBS! And if you can't for some reason, you can always call the hospital and ask an OB nurse there. Lots of times, they will have you come in to be checked out, and it would set your mind at ease.
